Long time men's fastball sponsor Jack Fireman dies

The was an announcement that long time men's fastball sponsor Jack Fireman died this weekend. A successful lawyer, he was the money behind the Toronto Gators - the nickname being short for "litigators".

Here is a write up on Twitter that gives an idea of the time, money and energy Mr. Fireman put into fastpitch softball: https://twitter.com/TorontoGators/status/1315336121501519872.

For a few years in the mid-90s, there was a competitive boys team in the Ottawa Valley Minor Fastball Association based out of Richmond, ON. When the team first formed, various names were floated, including the "Jock River Bandits." In the end, the boys (mostly eighth graders) settled on the name "Richmond Gators," inspired by Mr. Fireman's legendary Toronto Gators.

If the boys (or their parents) had realized that "Gators" was short for "Litigators," they might have made a different choice for fear of lawsuit alleging copyright infringement.
