So 5 teams from the various leagues in the Ottawa area get invites to go the Worlds and finish a combined 3-18, getting outscored 127-43. Cause for concern? Not for local fastball, but hopefully it is for the ISC.

The one team who earned the trip to Kitchener, Team Easton has to be concerned more than anyone. Huge expectations. Horrible finish.

Nobody expected any miracles from the other four teams who were invited despite poor showings at the qualifier. And to no surprise, when thrown in against top level competition, they could not compete. In fact, if it was not for Blackburn adding an outside pitcher, the four invites would have finished without one victory.

This does not mean that these teams are not good teams, or that they did not put in a strong effort at the tournament. Some teams had injuries. Some had problems filling rosters for the trip. It simply means that they should not have been there. Anybody who argues otherwise is too proud to admit the truth.

Does it not take away from the credibility of this tournament inviting all these extra teams to fill holes? Why not just lower the number of teams? Do something to ensure that the level of competition is at least close.

On a positive note in regards to fastball in the Valley, Cory Costello, playing for the Niagara Snappers put in another world class performance and fell one game short for the second year in a row. Anyone who knows me and the history between Cory and I is probably wondering what my angle is by writing this, I assure you there is none. But the truth is every time he is on the mound or at the plate, his talent level and desire to win is something to see. So the Valley was well represented when #28 was on the field.

Tyler, you are missing my point. What was your record at the qualifier? It is an embarrasment in my eyes to see teams who finished in local qualifiers with records below .500 going to what is supposed to be the "World Championships". Why even hold qualifiers? Make it a cash tourney. Really, what is the difference at this point?

I would say that we (Quyon) would have been a more competetive team had 1 of our 2 pitchers been available. Our ancient pitching staff for the week, was held together by duct tape and when you have no pitching and are starting from behind, pretty hard to stay in the game! I do agree about the births though, there is no way that 5 or 6 teams should have got births from the Sydenham qualifier. It basically took away the option of picking up players, everybody was already going!

I agree Tim, i was very surprised when we went 2-2 in the qualifier (Quyon) and got an invite - now i realize it is circumstance, because the tournament was in Kitchener which kept many other (better) american teams from going. That being said i was happy to go, it was too bad we didn't have our pitchers. As far as rankings and seeds, i don't see how they add up, we instantly get a 30 something ranking becuase we beat Scarborough twice. Why have a qualifier when you end up inviting 2/3 of the teams at it.
