Wednesday night in Manotick - now with deets

Ottawa Blitz 5 WC Electric 4

The Ottawa Blitz put their first win in the books on Wednesday night in Manotick with a 5-4 come from behind win over Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric.

Jamie Blakely had the win, while Bud Hanlon took the loss in relief of Steve Cavanagh.

Fitzroy scored three in the top of the second. Steve Johnson reached on an error with one out, then Steve Cavanagh doubled to cash Johnson. Mitchell Taylor walked, then Adam Brown struck out. Jon Daley walked to load the bases. Trevor Barton then singled to score two, and took second base on the throw in. Blakely got out of the inning with a ground ball.

The Blitzos got two back in the third. With one out, Andrew Bruce singled. Derek Dummond then singled, and took second base when the throw from right field was offline. Will Mood grounded out to short, but scored Bruce. Then Tony Searle singled to plate Dummond and make the score 3-2 after three.

The home side tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Russ Mitchell tripled, and scored on a Ron Hrcyak single. Darron Barr then singled to put men on the corners. Cavanagh struck out Bruce to get two out. Then Derek Dummond drove a ball right back at Cavanagh, striking him in the head, and popping up the ball for shortstop Daley to catch to keep the game tied. Cavanagh was shaken up on the play and was removed from the game as a precautionary measure, but was OK.

Fitzroy had a golden opportunity in the top the fifth. Singles by Jeff Cavanagh, Steve Johnson and a walk to Bud Hanlon with one out loaded the bases. Blakely got the next two batters to strike out to keep the game at 3-3.

The Blitz went ahead in the bottom of the frame when Hanlon went in to pitch. Will Mood tripled to lead off the inning. After a ground ball to second with the runner held, Derick Bulley hit a fly to left field. Jim Hook came up throwing, firing a bullet to the plate, but a bad bounce allowed Mood to score to put the home side up 4-3.

WC Electric came back to tie it in the top of six. Daley led off with a single and scored on a one out Neil Murphy double.

Ottawa Blitz sealed their first win of the GOFL season in the sixth. Another lead off hit, this time a single by Russ Mitchell, his third hit of the game, started things off. Ron Hrycak singled to put runners on the corners. Then Darron Barr hit a deep fly ball to left field that was foul. The catch was made, and Mitchell scored the winning run on the sac fly by Barr.

Blakely retired the 'Trics in order in the seventh to preserve the 5-4 victory.

Manotick Lomor Printers 4 WC Electric 2

Manotick continued their undefeated season with a 4-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Trevor Lahey had the win in relief of Paul Ceppi, while Bud Hanlon took the loss.

The Printers threatened in the first and second innings. Rich Antunnes and Don Cox both singled in the first but were stranded. Lindsay Mendynski singled and John Lindsey doubled to put runners on second and third in the second inning with none out. But after a K, Hanlon induced ground ball to short which Jon Daley whipped home for the tag at the plate. Another grounder ended the inning.

Ceppi started strongly for Manotick, striking out 8 of the first 11 batters he faced and allowing only a Trevor Barton double in the first four innings of work.

Manotick got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. John Lindsey singled to start the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Rob Soublier. Soublier made it to third on a Trevor Lahey single to put runners on the corners. A deep sac fly to centre by Joe Allan put the Printers on the board.

WC Electric temporarily took the lead in the top of the fifth. Ceppi struck out the first two batters, but the second hitter, Bud Hanlon, reached first when the ball eluded the catcher. With Mitchell Taylor in to pinch run for Hanlon, Troy Wilson singled to advance Taylor 60 feet. Jim Hook then selected a good time for his first career GOFL hit, punching a flare single on a check swing to right field to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed the speedy Taylor to score and advance all runners one base. Jon Daley then hit a sac fly to deep right to score Wilson and put the 'Trics up 2-1.

The lead was not to last as Trevor Power led off with a single and was moved to second on a Don Cox ground out. Cal Medynski then singled to bring home Power. The Printers loaded the bases later in the inning, but Hanlon got out of the jam with the score tied at 2.

With Lahey brought in to pitch in the sixth, Steve Johnson walked and Neil Murphy singled to start the inning. After an infield fly, Steve Cavanagh hit a shallow single to left to load the bases - Murphy had to hold at third as fielder Don Cox came up quickly with the ball. Lahey got out the inning with a strikeout and a fly ball.

Manotick scored the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rich Antunnes singled, his third hit of the game, with one out. With the speedy Tony Riches in to run for Antunnes, Trevor Power launched a high shot to right field that went out of the park for a 4-2 lead, which held up for the win.
