Quyon tops North Gower 8-4 on Tuesday

from Shawn Laframboise

Flyers Double-Up Marlies

On Tuesday night the Quyon Combat Flyers hit the road and captured their first win in North Gower in three tries this season. Matt Greer got the ball and pitched all seven innings for Quyon. The Marlies countered with Shannon Borho who took the loss, and Gord Flannery saw some action in relief.

Quyon got on the board first with a 1-out solo homerun off the bat of Shawn Laframboise in the top of the first inning.

North Gower answered back with one of their own in the bottom of the first. Nick Bowman walked for the Marlies, and then scored on an RBI double from Borho. Greer then managed to retire the next three batters.

The Flyers tacked on two more in the second inning. After a Steve McCord walk, Tim Craig placed a perfect bunt single to put two on and no out. McCord would then score on a Curtis Daley single up the middle. With two out, Laframboise knocked in the second run of the inning, when his hit to shortstop was misplayed. After being replaced by the two-out catcher rule, the Quyon runner would be thrown out at second by Tyler Cox to get the Marlies out of the innning.

North Gower answered right back with another two of their own in the bottom half of the second. Stephane Vinette walked, and Ryan Cox knocked him in with an RBI triple to left field, that eluded the diving Quyon fielder. Cox would then score on a ground out from brother Tyler.

The see-saw battle continued in the third, with Nick Armitage hitting a solo shot to deep left with the first pitch of the inning. Greer would then walk for the second time, and score on a Troy Cote RBI single.

The Marlies would score their fourth and final run in the bottom of the third. Brendan Holmes reached on a fielders choice. After advancing to second on a passed ball, he would score on an RBI single from the bat of Mike Savoie. McCord came up with the ball quick in centerfield, and a good throw and cut off play by Greer at the pitcher's mound caught Savoie between first and second, resulting in the third out.

Greer then settled in, retiring his last 12 batters, and striking out six of them. Quyon also added three more insurance runs, to make the final 8-4.
