Caveman enjoys the Final Weekend tournament
Note: Memories of Elkland is coming soon - almost finished it!
Thanks to all players and fans that supported the Final Weekend tournament in Fitzroy Harbour. We had excellent crowds especially on the Friday night and great support from our local 'Trics fans as well as the large contingent from Micksburg.
The Caveman really enjoyed the event too.
Friday morning he was pumped and ready to go for his big gig singing the anthem. He sprung out of bed, and whipped off his PJs to brush his teeth in the nude, as he does every morning (charming habit). Then, without getting dressed, he did a practice version of O Canada, and asked how it was. When told he sounded ready to go, he asked if was possible to do it that night naked too!
Then Friday night he actually went through with it, and sang the National Anthem in front of the 200+ crowd in attendance. He was decked out in a WC ball cap and t-shirt when he arrived. However, before he took centre stage his ball cap was missing. I asked him where his WC ball cap was and with an exasperated look he said: "Uh, Daddy, you can't wear a hat when you hear the anthem." Tough to argue with that.
You may have wondered what all the pointing was about at the end of the anthem. That was the Caveman's version of Rene Rancourt, the anthem singer at the Boston Bruins games.
Afterward I told him how proud I was. He took the praise in stride and said: "Daddy, I just looked at Fitzroy Junior and pretended he was the only one there!". Good advice to potential anthem singers!
Since it was late when the WC Electric vs Kars game started at around 9 pm, Mrs Fastball wanted to take him home to bed. He was pretty upset, but after a few tears, the two of us convinced his mom to let him stay and watch. He was very pleased with the result as the 'Trics pulled off a victory over the Aces.
He was also lucky enough that night to have get an autograph from Stittsville's legendary Johnny Leroux who was in attendance. Caveman thought it was pretty cool to have his ball cap signed by a guy who had an arena named after him.
Despite having done something that most adults wouldn't have dared to in front of a crowd, he claimed his highlights of Friday night were the WC win over Kars ("you never beat them, Daddy!") and his brush with greatness and getting that autograph.
After the weekend wrapped up, Caveman was suitably impressed with the Micksburg squad and how they swept their games to win the championship. He asked on Sunday morning: "Daddy, do you have to live in Micksburg to play for the Micksburg Twins?" I told him that while most of the guys did live in or near Micksburg it wasn't a requirement to play on the team. So he said "Ok that's good. When I grow up I am going to live in Fitzroy but I am going to play ball for Micksburg because they win all the time!" Some dedication to WC!
