West Carleton wins "Harbour Days" game vs Quyon
Thursday night was the Greater Ottawa Fastball League's annual "Harbour Days" game in Fitzroy Harbour, with West Carleton Electric prevailing 5-1 over the Quyon Flyers.
A decent sized crowd was on hand for the event. Andy Barber had the win, tossing a three hitter, while Matt Greer took the loss.
West Carleton got on the board in the bottom of the second on a two-out Neil Murphy solo home run. Spencer Rodd then reached on an error and Andy Barber doubled, but both were stranded when Greer struck the next blogger batter out.
Quyon responded in the top of the third as savvy veteran Earl Kearns hit a solo shot to straight away centre to make it 1-1.
The home team took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Kevin Shonfield singled, followed by Jon Daley getting hit by a pitch. Jeff Barber's sac bunt moved both runners over and they scored on Jeff Cavanagh's single.
WC added another pair of runs in the fifth. Shonfield singled and after a fly out, Jeff Barber reached on an infield single. Chris Costello then mashed a ball off the fence to score two more for Fitzroy.
The Flyers looked like the may start a rally in the top of the sixth when Dennis McCleary hit a flare to right, but a hard charging Jon Daley made a spectacular catch in shallow right field, much to the delight of the assembled crowd (and JCav).
