Scott Smith leads Belmore Stingers to OASA “C” Provincial Title
The Belmore Stingers, led by 2004 ISC II ToC Most Valuable Pitcher, Scott Smith, won the 2005 Ontario Amateur Softball Association’s Men’s Provincial “C” tournament in Bobcaygeon & Fenelon Falls over the Labour Day weekend. The tournament was a 12-team three-game guarantee tournament.
In the undefeated game, Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric defeated Belmore Stingers by a score of 2-1. Bud Hanlon got the win for WC Electric, while Chris Eadie took the loss for the Stingers in relief of Scott Smith. A seventh inning RBI double by Jon Daley cashed in the winning run.
In the loser’s bracket semi final, Lake Simcoe Lightning defeated Blackburn JEM Lumbermill Bombers by a score of 9-3.
Belmore then defeated Lake Simcoe 8-6 in the loser’s bracket final, with Scott Smith getting the victory and Rick May getting the loss.
In the first championship game, Belmore beat Fitzroy Harbour 7-1. Fitzroy was within two runs until the top of the seventh when Belmore broke the game open by scoring four. Scott Smith, who also hit two home runs, was the winning pitcher, with Mark Wright taking the loss.
In the “if game”, Belmore again defeated Fitzroy Harbour, this time by a score of 4-1. Smith again was the winning pitcher, and Bud Hanlon was the loser.
While no formal MVP was awarded, it would have clearly gone to Scott Smith of the Belmore Stingers.
Final order of finish:
Gold: Belmore Stingers (Bluewater League)
Silver: Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric (Greater Ottawa League)
Bronze: Lake Simcoe Lightning (Oshawa City and District League)
Other participating teams were: Blackburn JEM Lumbermill Bombers, Ottawa Blitz, Colborne Merchants, Bobcaygeon Jermyn Lumber, Lindsay Paper Box, Fenelon Falls Log Chateau, Napanee/North Fred Kings, Campbellford Trent Hills Titans, and the Wyevale Tribe.
