Orleans Gators stage comeback, defeat WC Electric 5-4

The Orleans Gators overcame a three run seventh inning deficit to defeat Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric 5-4 in Orleans on Thursday night.

WC Electric appeared to be in command of the game after six and a half innings, taking a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, Matt Bowman had a three run triple with the bases loaded in the bottom of the final inning to win the game for the Gators.

Chad Hargrove had the pitching win.

Bud Hanlon took the loss for Fitzroy Harbour. Troy Wilson and Mike Cavanagh had homeruns for WC Electric.

WC Electric broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Bud Hanlon walked, moved to second on a Mike Cavanagh sacrifice bunt and was driven in by a Troy Wilson two-run line drive home run to right.

Fitzroy pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Steve Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After two subsequent bunts moving Johnson to third, Adam Brown hit an RBI single to score Jason Armstrong who was running for Johnson on the two out catcher rule.

Orleans responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Chad Hargrove walked, one of his three on the night. Hargrove then moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Derek Bergeron hit the ball directly back to Hanlon who then tried to get Hargrove who had taken a big jump off second. However, as Hargrove was in a run down, a throw hit him in the back, allowing him to reach third safely and putting runners on the corners. After a strikeout by Eric Lafleur, Brian Friesen then hit a ball sharply up the middle which WC shortstop Mike Cavanagh knocked down and was able to keep in the infield, but no out was made and Hargrove scored to make it 3-1 for WC.

In the top of the seventh, the WC Electric added what looked to be an insurance run when Mike Cavanagh hit a solo HR to left to put the visitors up 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Hanlon to this point had allowed only two hits and struck out 13 over six innings. However, the WC Electric could not close the door as the scrappy Gators staged a comeback. Brian Friesen hit a single to lead off the inning. Nick Bowman was then hit by a pitch, and Matt Alkerton walked, to load the bases with none out. Jordan Adams then hit a ball to shortstop Cavanagh who went to go to make a play at first base, however, with the firstbaseman out of position, a run scored and no outs were made. Matt Bowman then stroked a liner to right centre, just under the glove of a diving Jon Daley, which went to the fence for a triple, scoring all runners on base and winning the game for Orleans.
