WC Electric comes back to defeat Easton 4-3

WC Electric came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Team Easton 4-3 on a Todd Clouthier RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in GOFL play in Fitzroy Harbour on Friday night. Both teams had depleted line ups, with only nine regulars and Easton even recruited a "retiree" to round out their line up.

Kyle Olson took the loss for Easton, pitching well in relieving Dan Konkle who lasted three pitches on the night. Brad Porter had the complete game win for WC Electric.

Team Easton scored their only three runs of the night all in the first inning. John Peck started things off with a one out single that deflected off of Porter's glove. Todd Fraser then ripped a single to left field, putting men on first and second for clean up hitter Randy Peck. R.P. then hit a home run to centre field, putting Easton up 3-0. Pat O'Connor also had a single in the inning, but Porter had two strike outs to end the threat.

In the bottom of the first, Dan Konkle lasted only three pitches before removing himself from the game due to injury. Kyle Olson came in to pitch for Easton.

As Easton only had nine regulars and Konkle was hurt, captain Randy Peck reached into the stands to find a ninth player. Former WC Electric player Mark Wright, who had retired after the 2006 season, was at the park in Fitzroy to watch the game with his wife Stephanie and two children. With the injury to Konkle, Wrighty was pressed into service and played left field for the visitors - in his jeans.

WC Electric scored to make it 3-1 in the second. Shawn Rebertz hit a one out single and stole second. Todd Clouthier then walked. Steve Cavanagh then hit an RBI single. Olson retired the next two batters.

The home team scored another run in the third to make it 3-2. Jon Daley led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, but was picked off by catcher Todd Fraser taking too big a lead at second. Michael Cavanagh later in the inning hit a two out triple to spark the 'Trics. Cavanagh was then brought in by an RBI single by Troy Wilson. Shawn Rebertz then hit a single to left, but Wilson was thrown out trying to take third by former teammate Wright, to end the inning.

WC Electric threatened in the fourth, after singles by Steve Cavanagh and Adam Brown, but Olson closed the door with two strike outs to end the inning.

Porter was pitching strongly for the home side, retiring the side in order in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings.

WC Electric evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Cavanagh hit a double with one out, and reached third on a wild pitch. Troy Wilson then grounded out, but earned his second RBI of the evening.

Team Easton threathened in the top of the sixth when Randy Peck drew a two-out walk, and Mark Wright singled. However, Porter got O'Connor to ground out to end the inning.

After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, the game was still tied at three.

Jon Daley led off the bottom of the seventh for the 'Trics with a solid single. Beef Johnson then dropped a sac bunt to move Daley to second. Easton attempted to get the out at second, but an errant throw resulted in men on the corners with none out. Easton then elected to intentially walk Michael Cavanagh to load the bases, bringing up clean up hitter Troy Wilson. The strategy seemed to work, as Wilson hit into a 3-2-3 double play. Easton then elected to intentionally walk Shawn Rebertz to load the bases and set up the force play. With the bases loaded, two out, and a tied game in the bottom of the seventh, Todd Clouthier came to the plate for the home team. Clouthier hit a walk off single to drive in the game winning run, and send the fans home happy as the 'Trics won 4-3.

Brad Porter had the win, allowing five hits in seven innings of work, with three earned runs. Porter walked two and struck out ten.

Kyle Olson had the loss in relief of Dan Konkle. Konkle threw only three pitches, as Olson entered the game during the first WC Electric at bat. Olson allowed four earned runs on twelve hits, allowed three walks (two intentional) and struck out six.
