Toledo peewee Jets capture B championship at Cobourg Invitational
from Luke Healey
After facing bantam teams for the past 4 weeks the Toledo GIM Jets welcomed the sight of Peewee clubs over the weekend.
The tournament featured 10 teams from the central Toronto area and as far east as Toledo. They included provincial favorites Springbrook and Napanee.
The Jets completed the 4 game round robin with a record of 2 wins, 1 loss and a 1-1 tie against a strong Springbrook club to open the tournament. A 4-2 loss to Scarbourgh Sunday prevented the Toledo from playing in the A championship game against Napanee. Both Coaches were quite frustrated with the Sunday loss due to the slow start and the inability to capitalize on runners in scoring position.
“Based on how we played on Saturday, this was a team we should have beaten”, coach Robertson indicated.
Blow out wins over host Cobourg and Richmond Hill left Toledo controlling there own destiny on Sunday morning.
The B-championship game featured Toledo against Frontenac Sunday afternoon. After overcoming a 1st inning 2-0 deficit, the Jets scored 12 unanswered runs to coast to 10-2 decision. Napanee defeated Springbrook 2-1 to Capture the A.
In giving up only 7 runs over the weekend and scoring 37, the coaches were overall quite pleased with their team's effort. Jesse Robertson, Kirk Jordan and Roddy Freeman led the team in hits and reached base multiple times over the weekend.
Next weekend Toledo will open the eliminations against the defending Eastern Canadian champions and host club Stratford on Friday evening.
