Equipment for Cuba

This information passed on by Terry Shea

2009 Cuba Baseball Initiative

In 2008 we saw the launch of an initiative to collect used baseball equipment for shipment to Cuba. The first order of business for 2009 was to give the effort a name. Cuba Baseball Initiative will continue in 2009 and beyond, with the help of the Dubois Charitable Foundation and the willingness of area leagues to participate.

In 2008 we collected and shipped the following.

-23 fully stocked equipment bags (incl. 2 sets of catchers gear in each)
-125 batting helmets
-4 sets of umpire equipment
-400 (plus) uniforms (t-shirts and caps)
-plus loads of sundry equipment such as bases, gloves, balls, bats, etc.

The supplies were shipped in November and December. John Dubois, founder and chairman of the Dubois Foundation, has arranged distribution to leagues and schools, specifically in the areas hit with the hurricanes last year. The supplies are included with humanitarian aid that represents the largest part of their efforts.

John and his group will be visiting Cuba in March to audit the distribution efforts. He will be sending along a report later to show the results of our efforts.

Our target for this year is 25 equipment bags. John has again committed their resources to look after shipping and distribution.

We are asking the leagues to look at their equipment and sort through the obsolete items that would be appropriate to send south. What’s appropriate? If it can be used to play baseball and it has any life in it, pass it along and we’ll look after it. It you’re not sure, ask and we’ll decide.

If you’re interested, contact me by email and we will arrange pickup. There is no rush, as shipping occurs anywhere from June to October.

It would be accurate to say that almost every boy in Cuba plays baseball. The lack of a ball and bat doesn’t stop the game. One equipment bag brings the game to many children and will make it much safer for them.. A batting helmet alone is a must here, but a luxury in Cuba.

One last comment. This is not an original idea. Many people have taken the same initiative. Some, by taking a glove or a ball in their baggage on vacation. Others have organized larger shipments. If you are supporting any other efforts, please continue. We do not want to disturb any existing programs.
