Friday night fastball in Quyon

Friday night fastball in Quyon produced two close games on a nice night for ball in front of a good crowd.

Quyon COMBAT Flyers 4 Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric 3

The first game of the doubleheader saw the home team prevail with a come from behind 4-3 victory.

Drew Hathway had the pitching win in relief of Matt Greer, while Bud Hanlon went the distance for the visitors.

WC Electric opened up the scoring with three in the top of the third. Adam Brown walked to lead off the inning, but was put out at second on an attempted sac bunt by Jim Hook. Jon Daley then hit a two run homer for the game's first hit. After a ground out, Trevor Barton singled and then scored on a Troy Wilson double to make it 3-0 'Trics.

In the bottom of the third, Luke Young's solo HR was the first Quyon hit of the game and made the score 3-1.

The Flyers' big inning in the bottom of the fifth put them in the lead. Veteran Earl Kearns led off with a blooper just past first base, earning him a double. After two ground outs, one of which moved Kearns to third, Matt Greer walked to put runners on the corners. Dennis McCleary's infield single scored Kearns. Nick Armitage stroked a liner to centre, eluding the diving centrefielder, and plating what proved to be the tying and winning runs.

The home side had another chance to score in the sixth. Shawn Laframboise hit a single wiht one out, and moved to third on Earl Kearns' single. However, a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.

Quyon put Drew Hathway in to pitch in the fourth. Only one Fitzroy runner (a Mitchell Taylor walk) reached base against Hathway as he kept the West Carleton bats silent over the final four frames.
