West Carleton defeats Stittsville 10-3 at the Grove

Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric defeated the Stittsville 56ers by a score of 10-3 in six innings of GOFL play at the Grove on Wednesday night in the debut game for both teams.

Jeff Barber earned the win for the ‘Trics, with Steve Cavanagh getting the save. Darren Featherstone took the loss with relief from Adam Smith in his first North American game since returning from the South Korean league.

While GOFL historic data is sketchy / non-existent, it’s believed that at least four records were set in the game:
1) Longest six inning game on record: 2h20min
2) Most walks, both teams: 26
3) Most runners left on base, both teams: 30
4) Most innings ended with the bases loaded: 8 (4 times each)

The home team scored in the bottom of the first frame. Scott Herriott walked, moved to second on a Dan Jessiman walk, then scored when Darren Featherstone reached on error put the 56ers up 1-0.

The Electric tied the game at 1-1 in the second. Neil Murphy walked, moved to second on Dave Bahm’s sacrifice bunt. Jeff Cavanagh and Beef Johnson both walked to load the bases and Murphy scored on a wild pitch.

Fitzroy took the lead for good in the third. Andy Barber and Murphy both walked, then scored on Bahm’s three run shot to right field. Jeff Cavanagh then singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Mitch Taylor’s RBI single to put the Electric up 5-1.

Stittsville made things close by scoring a pair in the fourth. Mike Barrett walked. Then after a flyout, John Craig also walked. Dan Jessiman hit a single to cash Barrett. Featherstone walked to load the bases and Craig scored on Dan Bradley’s sacrifice fly to centre.

The ‘Trics added a run in the fifth when Derek Barber scored after four consecutive walks.

A four-run sixth for the Electric sealed the victory. Adam Brown reached on an error and Shawn Ryan and Mitch Taylor both walked to load the bases. Jon Daley’s single cashed two runs, followed by an RBI single by Steve Cavanagh and an RBI on a fielder’s choice for Murphy.
