Carp downs Stittsville 3-2 with details
From Eric Rosenquist
The I4C Victory squad were down to their last strike, but after narrowly losing their first two games of the season they managed to get into the win column with a 3-2 decision over the Stittsville 56ers in Carp on Thursday night.
Neil Cooke gets credit for the win after taking over the pitching duties for Carp from starter Ryan Chatten in the 5th inning with the score tied 2-2. Trevor Scott went the distance for the 56ers.
Stittsville did all of their scoring in the top of the 1st inning. Leadoff hitter Ryan Bond stroked a single up the middle to get things rolling. Chatten fanned the next batter, but 56ers center fielder Dan Jessiman followed that with another single to give Stittsville two baserunners with only one out. A walk to the #4 hitter Trevor Scott loaded the bases with only one out as Chatten struggled to locate his pitches in the early going.
Ben Gigliotti then hit a hard grounder that got past the Carp third baseman to score Bond and Jessiman. Chatten then settled in and got out of trouble via a fielders choice off the bat of Adam Smith and a strikeout of Dan Bradley.
Chatten threw three scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Neil Cooke to start the 5th. Cooke shut down the Stittsville hitters over the final three innings, fanning 7 batters and giving up only two singles.
Carp got on the board in their half of the first inning when leadoff hitter Eric Colvin hit a hard grounder that took a bad hop on the hard Carp infield and bounced off the third basemen. Colvin then stole second and came home on catcher Al Read's two-out single to left field. Stittsville pitcher Trevor Scott worked himself into and out of trouble, walking the next batter and running the count full on Carp right fielder Adam Fleming before getting Fleming to fly out to RF and end the inning.
Carp tied the game in the bottom of the second when DP Dan Loney drew a leadoff walk, then went first-to-home when Carp rookie Adam Purdy's sac bunt was misplayed. Purdy later went from 2nd to 3rd on a passed ball, and Carp threatened to score more runs when Eric Colvin drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second to give Carp two runners in scoring position. Trevor Scott got the 56ers out of the jam however by getting a ground ball out and a strikeout.
Scott kept the Carp bats at bay the rest of the way, but got into some trouble when Colvin lead off the bottom of the 7th with a single. Carp SS Kevin McGuire then dropped a perfect bunt down to move Colvin to 2B and reach safely himself. With Bobby-Jack Hart at the plate for Carp, the bunt was on again, but this time Stittsville played it perfectly and managed to get the lead runner Colvin out at 3B. It looked like the game might end in a tie when Scott struck out the next batter than then got two strikes on Carp first baseman Tony MacDonald, but MacDonald ripped a ground ball down the 3B line that managed to go through the legs of the 56ers infielder, scoring McGuire from 2nd and giving Carp a 3-2 win.
