The season started strong for the GeeGees as they
defeated the uWindsor Lancers in both games Saturday; 6-3 and 9-0. In the first
of two games, the Lancers came out with strong hits and were able to
manufacture some runs, but unfortunately could not keep up with the bats of the
GeeGees and in the end lost 6-3. In the
second game of the day, starting pitcher Jean Cardona was dominant and with the
help of her defence, completed 6 shut out innings, as the game was called in
the 6th on a mercy.
Sunday started off well for the GeeGees once again as
their bats started early against the Western Mustangs with a 2-run homerun in
the 1st by Taylor Rogalsky. Some key
hits and base-running allowed the GeeGees to get a couple more insurance runs
as the game played out. The Mustangs scored once later in the game to attempt a
comeback, but in the end were no match for the pitching of Jean Cardona and the
GeeGees took the game 4-1. This was of course a large accomplishment in the
OIWFA and a big win for the GeeGees as no other team had defeated the Western
Mustangs in 100+ games. In the final game
of the day Baylie Gigolyk started for the Gee-Gees and pitched five strong
innings, but the bats of the Mustangs came alive in this second game and
unfortunately found all of the holes they needed to take the game from the
GeeGees. Despite this loss against Western, the GeeGees started with an
exceptionally strong 3-1 weekend and can only hope to build from this as the
rest of the season unfolds!
