Stittsville defeats West Carleton 14-3

The Stittsville 56ers won 14-3 in Fitzroy Harbour on Tuesday night in GOFL play, defeating West Carleton Electric in a run-rule shortened five inning game.

Dan Konkle had the win, with relief from Darren Featherstone. Steve Cavanagh took the loss in relief of the injured Jeff Barber, and Adam Rueckwald had an inning in relief in his GOFL debut.

Stittsville opened the scoring in the top of the first. Tyler Nystedt walked and Scott Herriot reached on a misplayed ground ball. Both were driven in by Scott Parson's double off the left field fence.

In the bottom of the first frame, Andy Barber walked to lead off, and was moved to second on a Trevor Barton sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved Andy to third and a single by Derek Barber scored his younger brother. Jeff Barber singled to put men on first and second. The next hitter Michael Cavanagh hit a hard liner off hand down first base, striking Jeff Barber in the shin. Barber was hurt on the play (and called out) and did not return to pitch. After a walk to Neil Murphy, Konkle got out of the inning with a strike out.

With Steve Cavanagh in from right field to pitch, the 56ers put up four runs in the second inning. Ryan Bond lead off with a walk, and John Craig singled. Nystedt walked to load the bases. Three runs scored on Darren Featherstone's line drive to centre field. Featherstone later scored on Dan Jessiman's single to make it 6-1 for the visitors.

After loading the bases but being kept off the board in the third, the 56ers put five runs across in the fourth. Bond and Trevor Scott had RBIs, and Nystedt had a three run homer in the inning.

Featherstone came in to relief Konkle in the fourth inning. The first batter he faced, Michael Cavanagh, hit a solo home run to make it 11-2 for Stittsville.

Adam Rueckwald, recently signed to a junior card with the Domville Aces, made his GOFL pitching debut in the top of the fifth. Stittsville scored three on an RBI double by Ben Gigliotti and a two RBI single by Bond.

The bottom of the fifth saw Fitzroy score a single run on a solo home run by a pinch hitter, with his first homer in the GOFL since 2005. *

Final score, Stittsville 56ers 14, West Carleton Electric 3.

Tyler Nystedt earns the Caveman's Choice as player of the game, scoring three run, driving in three and hitting a home run, with two walks.

* Yeah, I hit one. Sure it was 226 feet, but it still counts.
