West Carleton Electric wins in wild finish over Kars Aces

West Carleton Electric won 2-1 in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action in the late game in Manotick on Wednesday night, taking a two games to none lead in their best of five playoff series over the Kars Aces.

Andy Barber had the win for the Electric while Cory Alkerton took the loss for the Aces.

West Carleton scored the game's first run in the third inning. Neil Murphy walked to start off. After a strike out, Murph scored all the way from first on Jon Daley's RBI triple to right.

It looked like Kars would even things up in the bottom of the third. Cory Morrison singled with two out and stole second. Chad Milne ripped a ball that looked sure to score Spud, but a diving stab by shortstop Michael Cavanagh resulted in Morrison being put out at third to end the inning.

Kars again threatened in the fourth. Cory Alkerton got on base on a passed ball third strike. Matt Alkerton then hit an infield single. With the runners on second and third, Barber got a pop up and two strike outs to end the threat.

The Aces evened the score in the fifth. Kristian Knapp used his speed to leg out an infield single to start the inning. Knapp advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Nick Ellis then walked and took second uncontested. Morrison's sac fly to left centre scored Knapp to even the score at 1-1. Ellis attemped to take home later in the inning on a passed ball, but was put out at home plate.

The Electric scored the go ahead run in the top of the seventh. Jeff Barber lead off with a double, and took third and home on wild pitches to make it 2-1.

The bottom of the seventh for the Aces started well. Knapp walked, then stole second. Knapp took third on a passed ball. Ellis then walked and stole second without a throw. An infield chopper resulted in Morrison reaching base and loading things up, with no outs. Barber struck out the next two batters. Then, with Matt Alkerton at the plate, a wild pitch saw Knapp attempt to take home to tie the game. As Knapp went past home, Andy Barber was covering the plate took the ball and tagged Knapp. The home plate umpire ruled that Knapp had not touched the plate and was out, ending the game 2-1 in West Carleton's favour.
