Kars defeats Stittsville 5-2

from Chad Milne

Kars Aces hosted Stittsville for the second game of the 56ers’ Greater Ottawa Fastball League doubleheader in Manotick on Wednesday night. Cory Alkerton pitched for Kars while Dan Konkle got the start for Stittsville.

Kars took a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Leading off, Nick Ellis reached base on a passed ball third strike and one out later Kristian Knapp singled. Both runners were brought home when Cory Alkerton absolutely destroyed a pitch, blasting a 3-run homerun to straightaway centre field. Chad Milne followed with a walk, but Konkle was able to get out of the inning by striking out the next two batters.

Kars added to their lead in the 2nd. Jordan Adams doubled to deep left to start the inning and later scored on a one out triple by Ellis. Shawn Forbes scored Ellis when he drilled a ball off the knee of Konkle, who then left the game due to injury. Kyle Olsen came on in relief and walked Knapp, but got the next two Kars’ batters.

Stittsville got on the board in the 3rd. Trevor Scott singled and later moved to second. With one out, the Stittsville batter grounded a ball to shortstop and was thrown out at first. On the play Scott tried to advance to third and an errant throw by the Kars’ first baseman allowed Scott to score. Olsen kept the game close for Stittsville, retiring 14 Kars’ batters in a row after walking the first batter he faced when entering the game. Stittsville scored another run in the 7th, courtesy of an rbi double off the bat of Adam Smith, but Alkerton finished strong to secure the 5-2 Kars’ win.
