Some softball news (updated)

With the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been otherwise pre-occupied but thought I would post a brief update on some local fastball news, such as it is.

  • City Manager Steve Kanellakos, top bureaucrat at the City of Ottawa, mentioned at Council on March 25 that he did not foresee the parks and rec folks issuing permits for sportsfield usage until late June, at the earliest. I don't believe this is an official policy yet, but it gives us an idea of when we may potentially get on the diamonds for the 2020 season. There may even be a chance we don't get on the diamonds at all this summer - we shall see.
  • Softball Canada announced today that all in person activities such as clinics or training sessions are cancelled until May 1st, at the earliest and they encouraged provincial organizations such as Softball Ontario to follow suit.
  • The Alumni Night in Carp, scheduled for May 1st has been cancelled. It remains to be seen if the 2020 Men's U23 Softball Canada Championship tournament scheduled for July 28 to August 2 in Carp will go forward or not.
  • The JL5 Memorial Golf Tournament, in memory of Joel Langford, was scheduled for early July this year, but is postponed due to the pandemic. They hope to be back in 2021.
  • There was a post on Twitter that Don Cherry's Sportsbar in Kanata, a long time sponsor of the Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League, is closing its doors for good. Unfortunate news for the Glen and for a business person who did a lot for the community.
  • Update April 3: Softball Ontario has cancelled all coaching clinics for 2020.
