Bear Creek declared Men's champions

The final game of the Softball Canada Men's Canadian Championship in Saskatoon, SK was washed out on Sunday due rain. 

Based on Saturday's results, Bear Creek, ON Express were declared gold medalists and Sooke, BC Loggers awarded silver.

East Hants, NS Mastodons got bronze.

There were 13 Men's teams at the event.

Saskatoon Brewers win Masters Men's title

The Softball Canada Masters Men's (40+) Canadian Championship ended Saturday with the host Saskatoon, SK Brewers taking the title with a 2-0 win over Cobourg, ON Force. The GOFL's Drew Hathway and Brad Pender were silver medalists with the Force.

Shakespeare, ON Falcons won bronze and the Waterdown, ON Hammer finished fourth.

Men's Canadians playoff round begins

The playoff round for the Softball Canada Men's Canadian Championship begins today in Saskatoon. 

Eight of the 13 teams participating advanced to the playoff round.

Four teams have a double life:

Masters Men's tournament down to four

There are four teams remaining at the Softball Canada Masters Men's (40+) Canadian Championship in Saskatoon, SK.

The host Saskatoon Brewers will play Shakespeare, ON Falcons at 1 p.m Eastern time with a trip to the Finals on the line

Cobourg, ON Force the defending champions will play Watedown, ON Hammer, last year's silver medalists, at 3:15 Eastern. Some GOFLers will be involved in this one with Drew Hathway (Pontiac) and Brad Pender (Vars) playing for Force and Matt Greer (Pontiac) and Adam Brown (West Carleton) on the roster for the Hammer.

The winners of the 3:15 p.m. game and losers of the 1 p.m. game will play at 7:45 p.m. Eastern in the semi-final. 

The gold medal game is at 10 p.m. Eastern. 

The schedule was adjusted due to a bad weather forecast for Sunday.

Batmen win U23 title

The Toronto Junior Batmen won the Softball Canada U23 Men's Canadian championship in Saskatoon on Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Nova Scotia. The gold medalists finished the tournament with eight wins and one loss. 

Tyler Branchaud (Manotick) and Colton Lecuyer (West Carleton) of the GOFL were with Toronto. 

Batmen to face Nova Scotia in U23 final

The defending champions Toronto Junior Batmen will face Nova Scotia in the gold medal game at 12:45 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday. 

Nova Scotia won the #1 vs #2 game by a score of 6-4 over Toronto to advance directly. 

Toronto came back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat New Hamburg Mustangs 8-5 in the semi-final.  The Mustangs earned bronze.

New Hamburg had defeated Newfoundland and Labrador then Tavistock Merchants to make it to the semi-finals. 

Branchaud, Hopper named U23 All stars

At the Softball Canada U23 Men's Canadian Championship, the All-Star Awards were announced today. 

Two GOFLers, Tyler Branchaud (Manotick Brewers) of Toronto Junior Batmen and Conner Hopper (West Carleton Electric) of New Hamburg Mustangs were named all-star outfielders.

Men's and Masters Canadians

The Softball Canada Men's and Masters Canadian Championships will be held in Saskatoon, starting tonight with Finals on Sunday. 

The Masters (40+) has ten teams: four from Saskatchewan, three from Ontario, two from Alberta and one from Manitoba. Waterdown Hammer Masters have Matt Greer of the GOFL's Pontiac Flyers and Adam Brown (West Carleton Electric) on the roster. The defending champions have Drew Hathway (Flyers) and Brad Pender (Vars Aces) suiting up.

On the Men's side there are 13 teams with entries from Saskatchewan (4), Ontario (4), Newfoundland and Labrador (2), British Columbia, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories. The Waterdown Hammer have Joran Graham, Joe Mick (both Micksburg), Conner Hopper (WC Electric) on the roster and Jamey Mick is helping coach. The U23 Toronto Junior Batmen are also playing in the event. They have Tyler Branchaud (Manotick Brewers) and Colton Lecuyer (WC Electric) playing for them.

U23 Canadians moves to playoff round UPDATED

The Softball Canada U23 Men's Canadian Championship is being held in Saskatoon with seven teams participating. 

The Toronto Junior Batmen, the defending champions who went through the Ontario Amateur Softball Association elimination tournament undefeated at 5-0, also haven't lost at Canadians and have six wins. They will play Nova Scotia Marshall Workplace Law Selects (5-1) in the 1st vs 2nd game today at 5:30 p.m. Eastern. The winner advances to the Final on Wednesday at 12:45 Eastern, the loser plays at 10 p.m. tonight. 

Tyler Branchaud of the GOFL's Manotick Brewers plays for the Batmen and Colton Lecuyer of West Carleton Electric was added for the event. Branchaud was #7 overall in batting average hitting .471. Nova Scotia's roster has many of the players who won bronze at the U20 Men's Canadians in Carp.

Finishing third (3-3) by virtue of a tie-breaker was the Tavistock, ON Merchants. They will play the winner of #7 Okanese, SK Thunderstrikers (0-6) and #6 host Delisle, SK Pride (1-5) at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Brothers Gavin and Connor Brooks of Napanee play for the Merchants.

The fourth vs fifth game at 12:15 p.m. EDT will feature two 3-3 teams - Moorfrost Mariners of Newfoundland against New Hamburg, ON Mustangs. Conner Hopper of West Carleton Electric was added by the Mustangs for the event. Hopper was #10 overall in batting average with a .429 average

WC Electric 2026 national champions

CARP – What became a calling card for the West Carleton Electric throughout the 2026 Canadian Fast Pitch Championship held last week Tuesday to Sunday (Aug. 4 to Aug. 10), the team became national champions on the very last pitch of the tournament.

The cardiac kids won time and time again through last-minute heroics all week, becoming the first local team to win a national fast pitch championship and doing it at the tournament they were hosting. Large crowds enjoyed great fastball all week long at the Carp Fairgrounds, and having the home team to cheer on all week, meant tournament organizers had their largest turnout of the three national championships Carp has hosted over the last four years.

The ‘Trics started the tournament last Tuesday (Aug. 4), beating Newfoundland and Labrador on the last pitch of the game with a walk-off home run hit by Nolan O’Brien. That would become the team’s signature play. But first a bit of adversity for West Carleton as Équipe Québec would pummel the Electric 15-1 later that same day.

West Carleton would finish the first round of the championship going 5-2, finishing second in the eight-team standings behind only the Brookfield Elks of Nova Scotia, who beat the ‘Trics 3-1 in the final game of the first round.

The playoff round started Saturday (Aug. 8). West Carleton would take on the Elks in what was undoubtedly the wildest game of the tournament and possibly any tournament.

First, both teams had to deal with a rain delay that pushed back the start of the game by more than two hours. Incredible work by the incredible field crew had the ball diamond in impeccable shape for the roughly 6 p.m. start. Despite the delay, organizers estimate there were roughly 1,000 fans in attendance for the game.

The Electric battled back from two huge deficits to earn a highly improbably win against the team wit the best record in the tournament.

In the fifth inning of the seven-inning game, the ‘Trics were down 9-3 and the Elks were one run away from invoking the seven-run mercy rule with a runner on third base looking to get home for the win.

West Carleton got out of that jam and was able to somehow tie the game and eventually win it 12-10 in the ninth inning – two extra past regulation.

Electric star Kaden Fowler hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth for the win. He also was credited for the pitching win, having taken over the bump from the starter.

Fitzroy Harbour’s Colton Lecuyer and Kinburn’s Finn Barton also had home runs for West Carleton.

The ‘Trics would play Ontario’s St. George Aces in the gold medal match. The Elks defeated Équipe Québec 7-6 to make it to the finals.

The bleachers were full and the entire field was surrounded by fans for Sunday’s (Aug. 9) gold medal game under a hot, punishing sun.

The Aces got off to an early lead in the back-and-forth game, but the ‘Trics would quickly tie it up, and eventually take their own lead. By the end of the sixth, the ‘Trics had once again overcome a one-run deficit to tie it up. Fowler, who pitched the entire game, would keep the Aces from scoring in the top of the seventh, and then would win the game for West Carleton with a one out, walk-off, solo home run to secure the national championship for the Electric’s first national championship.

Colton Lecuyer and Jackson Barton also homered for the ‘Trics in the game.

Following the game and the medal ceremony, West Carleton Electric manager Kinburn’s Trevor Barton, and his son, hot-hitting outfield Finn (Trevor’s other son Jackson is also on the team) spoke to West Carleton Online about the historic win.

“Unreal, can’t beat it,” Finn said of winning gold on a walk-off home run.

Trevor, who West Carleton Online spoke to about the national championship earlier in the season, despite the numerous close calls was supremely confident about the end result of the tournament.

“Unbelievable,” he said. “Never a doubt. I wasn’t worried in the least. We talked about adversity all year. Tuesday night we got beat bad and sometimes that can wake a team up. We used it as fuel the rest of the week and the boys played great.”

From coming within one run of being eliminated from even playing in the gold medal match, to wearing the medal proudly around their necks, it was a roller coaster of emotions for the ‘Trics.

“As a team, I don’t think we ever gave up,” Finn said. “Not one time. We always knew we had a chance to win. Just one run at a time, one hit at a time, one pitch at a time, and when you take it that way, it’s pretty easy to win.”

Trevor’s affiliation with the West Carleton Electric goes back decades, as a longtime infielder for the Electric’s adult Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) team to coaching for almost as long. He can’t quite remember a win this big for the West Carleton club.

“I can’t say we have (put a gold medal around his neck),” Barton said. “That’s the best group and the best result we’ve ever had as a group. Some of these kids I had in t-ball. I think up until now, the best we ever did was second in the province (which also just happened this year). Our men’s team, I think we’ve been in a provincial final, but nothing like this at the national level.”

Finn says winning at home makes the championship even more special.

“Can’t beat it,” he said. “In front of the fans with everyone cheering you on (Finn’s grandparents Don and Pam Armstrong sat just feet away from home plate for the entire tournament), there’s nothing better.”

“The crowds were amazing all week,” Trevor said. “It was unreal. It was the 10th man on our team every at bat, every game. It was huge.”

Many of the U20 Electric are only 18 years old. When West Carleton Online spoke to Trevor earlier in the year, he mentioned he expected the team to be even stronger next year. Now the coach has expanded his expectations.

“We’ll be looking to repeat,” he said. “We’ve got three kids graduating this year and everyone else will be back. So, we’ll be looking to repeat, but until then, we’re going to enjoy this moment.”

West Carleton Online also spoke to Finn earlier this year, but in that interview, we focused on his first year as a member of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Gatineau Olympiques.

Of course, we did talk about fastball and at that time he was “pretty pumped,” for the tournament. We asked Finn if the tournament lived up to his spring expectations.

“Everything and more,” Finn said. “No one could have drawn that up any other way. It was unreal.”

Following the awards ceremony, Softball Canada had an award for the West Carleton Fastball committee presented to Carp’s Geoff Lathem in honour of their hard work putting the tournament together.

Lathem said it took more than 150 volunteers and a year and a half to put it all together.

“Now let’s go drink some beer,” he told the fans.

“All the teams, all the fans, everyone we met in Carp, a class act,” the Softball Canada representative told the crowd.

West Carleton wins U20 Men's Canadian Championship

West Carleton Electric won the U20 Men's Canadian Championship on Sunday with a 7-6 win over the St. George, ON Aces. 

St George had beaten Brookfield, NS Elks 2-0 in the semi-final earlier in the day. 

Kaden Fowler had the pitching win and hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh to secure the title. Fowler was named MVP of the championship round.

Codee Rahn started for the Aces and was relieved by Nate Wylie.

Colton Lecuyer and Jack Barton also had back-to-back homers for WC in the second inning.

What a ride. I'm exhausted. Maybe I'll post more info later.

WC advances to gold medal game at U20s

West Carleton Electric advanced to the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship gold medal game on Sunday with a 12-10 dramatic,  intense and at times insane win in nine innings over the Brookfield, NS Elks on Saturday night at the Carp Fairgrounds.

Kaden Fowler earned the pitching win and hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth. He relieved starter Carter Marshall.

Will Singer went the distance for the Elks and took the loss.

Colton Lecuyer and Finn Barton also had home runs for West Carleton. 

At one point in the bottom of the fifth, the Electric were down 9-3, with a runner to invoke the mercy rule on third base. An improbable comeback and eventual victory in nine innings ensued.

With the victory, West Carleton Electric advanced to the gold medal game at 1:30 p.m. They will play the winner of the semi-final between Brookfield and the St. George Aces which defeated Équipe Québec 7-6 in the quarter-final game on Saturday night.

The story above doesn't do justice to the incredible game last night. I'm helping coach the team and far too exhausted to write more right now. Playoff Saturday at U20s

Saturday was the day for playoff round games at the U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp.

There was a rain delay about 2:45 p.m. and the grounds crew did excellent work to get the diamonds back in top shape quickly, impressing the Softball Canada supervisor and Umpire-in-Chief.

At the end of the day, three teams advanced to the medals on Sunday.

Brookfield gets by WC 3-1

The final pool play game at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp on Friday night was a well attended match up between the host West Carleton Electric and the Brookfield Elks from Nova Scotia, with first place seed on the line.

Brookfield prevailed with a 3-1 victory to lock up top spot with six wins and one loss in pool play. WC finished 5-2 and were seeded second as they defeated both the other teams with the same record.

The game was very tight throughout, with a Rylan Sutherland two run homer to centrefield in the bottom of the sixth being the difference to give the Elks the win.

Lefty Keegan Maguire had the pitching win, tossing a three hitter and striking out 11.

Dan Read threw very well for West Carleton, allowing only seven hits and striking out six.

Kaden Fowler's single drove in the WC run, scoring Finn Barton who had singled and moved to second on a Bruce Rebertz sacrifice bunt. Rebertz had the other Electric hit.

The two teams will play again in the 1 vs. 2 playoff game at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday with a direct trip to Sunday's final at stake. The loser goes to the semi-final.

West Carleton Electric put up two big wins on Thursday to take a share of first place and guarantee them a double life in the playoff round.

WC opened up with an 8-4 win over the Valley Vikings from Saskatchewan. Thomas McLean had the complete game victory on the slab for WC while Lachlan Dufour took the loss and had relief from three other pitchers. Jason McIntyre had a home run for WC.

The Electric won the late game in front of am enthusiastic crowd 6-1 over the third Ontario seed Chatsworth Longhorns. Carter Marshall went seven and got the pitching win. Kieran McComb took the loss with relief from Jakson Woods. The entire WC team hit very well, collectively only striking out once. Bryce Rebertz had homer for the Trics, while Jack Barton made an incredible catch in left field that saved a home run.

The Junior 'Trics play Brookfield, NS Elks at 7:45 p.m. on the final game of pool play on Friday night. A win puts them in the #1 seed for the playoff round, and based on tie -breakers they can fall no farther than #2 if they lose. The #1 vs #2 Game, with a trip to the Final on the line, will be played 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Two important wins for WC Electric over Ontario teams on Wednesday pushed the host team to a 3-1 record and put them in second place at the eight team event. 

The afternoon game for the 'Trics saw them defeat the top ON seed Plattsville Lightning 7-3. A big five run inning in the third helped WC stake a big lead that they didn't give up. Colton Lecuyer hit a homer for the home side and Nolan O'Brien a three RBI double. Carter Marshall got the complete game pitching win. Brett McCutcheon had the start for the Lightning and had relief from Jared Vosper. 

The night cap, again in front of a sizeable crowd, saw WC get by ON2 St. George Aces in a 3-2 squeaker. Kaden Fowler had the win, going the distance. Bryce Rebertz had a homer and a triple for West Carleton and also scored the game winning run, driven in by Ethan Howard who was two for three on the night. Ethan de Belleval, Cody Rahn and Nate Wylie pitched for St. George.

Games for the host team on Thursday are 3:30 p.m. vs Valley Vikings from Saskatchewan and 8 p.m. against the Chatsworth Longhorns.

The first game yesterday for West Carleton Electric at the U20 Canadian Championship was an exciting 5-4 victory over Newfoundland. A walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh by tournament pick up from Elmira Expos, Nolan O'Brien, sealed the victory. Kaden Fowler had the pitching win in relief of Thomas McLean. Zack Barker took the loss for NL in relief of Noah Stokes. An excellent article with full details of the win is available on West Carleton Online. (You will need a subscription. The second game didn't go so well with West Carleton falling 15-1 to Équipe Québec after giving up twelve runs in the first inning. Carter Marshall took the loss and had relief from Dan Read. Mark Tomatuk earned the win.

Next up for West Carleton on Day Two are games against two Ontario teams: 3:30 p.m. vs Plattsville Lightning and 8 p.m. vs St. George Aces.
