Brewers beat Athletics 1-0 in Shawville league playoffs
The first game of the Shawville Men's Fastpitch League playoffs on Tuesday night was - stop me if you've heard this before - a well played game of fastpitch softball.
The first place Trudeau Collision Brewers squeaked by the fourth place Bristolview Athletics 1-0 on a beautiful night for ball, ending in one hour and 25 minutes, just before the rain started.
Adam Rueckwald earned the shutout win for the BrewCrew, allowing only two hits. Trevor Lahey threw very well in a losing cause for the Athletics.
Lahey had one of the two hits for the visitors, a double in the fourth inning. The crafty lefty also threw out of several jams throughout the game, featuring liberal use of his dirty change-up.
With the game tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the seventh and extra innings looming, Steve McCord reached base with one out on a sharply hit grounder that couldn't be corralled by shortstop Pascal Asselin who made several great defensive plays on the night. When McCord took second on a wild pitch, the As intentionally walked Matt Greer. The following batter was Rueckwald who smashed a ball to the right-centre gap, to walk things off for the Brewers.
Next up in the Shawville league double knockout playoff bracket is the third place Young’s Appliance Royals against the second place Gannon/Blackburn Electric Inc. Bucks on Sunday at 7 p.m.
