Carp I4C goes 2-2 at Roberts Post, NY tourney

from Shawn Williams

It was a great weekend for fastball and the Carp I4C Victory wished they could have played more. On a trip down to Holland Patent, NY, just outside of Rome, NY, the Victory went 2-2 in the Roberts Post Invitational Fastpitch Tournament.

With eight regulars from the Carp team, supplemented by players picked up from Manotick Lomor Printers, the Valley Raiders and the North Leeds League, the Victory had an excellent chance to have a strong showing in the tournament.

In its first game on Saturday morning, I4C Victory loaded the bases and with two out, Carp leftfielder, Trevor Wood stroked a double to the gap to score the first three runs of the game against local team, the Northern Merchants. The Merchants responded in the top of the third with a single run and Carp got that one right back in its half of the third. The game remained 4-1 until the top of the seventh when the Merchants kept swinging the bats and plated two more runs with runners on first and second before Carp starter and winner, Neil Cooke shut them down to end the game.

The second match saw Carp up against host team, Roberts Post. Carp scored in its half of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first with one out, Carp starter Wood re-aggravated a shoulder injury and was removed form the game. Veteran left-handed pitcher, Gord Flannery came on in relief of Wood and was strong against the several left handed hitters in the Roberts Post line-up. However with little time to warm-up and battling a slight shoulder injury of his won, Flannery gave up two runs before being replaced by Cooke. Said Carp Head Coach and General Manager, Shawn Williams, “Gord is such a fierce competitor and a terrific guy. I knew he wasn’t 100% and I felt bad to have to throw him in there so early to try to hold us in the game but he did a great job for us. Our problem is that we didn’t give him or Cookie (Carp pitcher, Neil Cooke) any run support.” On the mound for Roberts Post was Jamie “Lumpy” Wilson who threw an excellent game for Roberts Post. The Carp players were not expecting to see Wilson and many were surprised when they heard he was going to be the opposition. But even the familiarity the Victory players had with Wilson with many of them facing him several times over the years, the bats did not get the job done and the final score was 2-1 for Roberts Post.

In a bit of an odd twist and scheduling snafu, Carp faced the Northern Merchants for the second time in three games in an eight team double elimination tournament. In a game that was moved from 9:00 PM on Saturday to 8:30 AM on Sunday because of some unforeseen delays on Saturday, Carp got into a slugfest with the Merchants. The game was highlighted by a monster home run off of Carp short stop, Pete Pettit. The game saw a number of hits, runner and deep counts with the final score being 7-5 for Carp.

The next match-up for the Victory was against CPI of Oswego, NY, the former McKie’s Sports team. CPI is ranked seventh amongst ISC II teams and while it did not have its “A” squad at the tournament it is still a formidable opponent. Cooke took to the mound again in a back to back effort having just won the first game of the day. After giving up a lead off single on the first pitch of the game, the CPI runner advanced to 2nd when Carp could not properly field a bunt. With runner on first and second, and nobody out, Cooke retired the next two batters. The fifth CPI batter reached out with the bat on an excellent drop ball thrown by Cooke and the ball barely made its way to the grass in left field allowing the lead off batter to score form second and make it 1-0 after a half inning of play. Despite numerous chances and threats from Carp including a line drive hit off of the bat of Kevin Griffin that was headed for the gap and would have scored Matt McNish from first but was snagged by the CPI second baseman, Carp could not push across a run and the final score was 1-0 for CPI eliminating Carp from the tournament.

Carp’s next game is Wednesday, August 9th in Manotick starting at 8:00 PM when the Victory take on Manotick Lomor Printers in the first game of the 2006 quarter finals of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League in a best two out of three series. The teams will play the following night in Carp, August 10th at 8:30 PM at the Fairgrounds in Carp. Admission to both games is free.
