Easton 2 - I4C 0 in four point game Thursday

The Carp I4C Victory were out to make a statement in the last regular season game of the year played in Carp on Thursday, August 3rd. As a first year team, the Victory wanted to show that it could play and compete with the best teams in the league, some of the top teams in Eastern Ontario and a couple of teams that are headed to the ISC II Tournament of Champions in Kitchener starting next weekend.

While not winning the game, Carp competed hard despite coming out on the losing end of a 2-0 score to Kanata Team Easton and its ace pitcher, Dan Konkle. Konkle and Carp’s Neil Cooke were at their grunting best as both pitchers threw plenty of strikes. In the end, Konkle came out ahead throwing a complete game one hitter, with no earned runs, 14 strikeouts, two walks and one wild pitch. Easton committed no errors and Carp left three runners on base. Cooke’s effort for Carp was against an excellent Easton line-up. He scattered four hits over seven innings, giving up two earned runs, with 10 strikeouts and walking a season high four batters.

Easton opened the scoring in the top of the first. After Dave Tubman struck out, Kevin Chevrier singled down the third base line. After Todd Fraser flew out to centrefield, Randy Peck drew a two out walk bringing younger brother John to the plate much to the delight of the many younger Peck’s in the stands to cheer on the on field exploits of their fathers. John didn’t disappoint the younger Peck clan and promptly hit a double scoring Chevrier from second.

Things got somewhat heated at the end of the second when Carp Head Coach and General Manager, Shawn Williams, committed the ultimate coaching sin of arguing balls and strikes with the plate umpire and was ejected. Said Williams, “I was trying to make a point but I crossed the line and I deserved to get tossed. The reason I was upset was that I thought in their (Easton’s) half of the second he missed a couple of pitches that Neil threw at the top of the strike zone. But Houlie (Carp catcher, Shawn Houle) told me that the plate umpire said he wasn’t going to call anything up there. I was fine with that. However, when we went to the plate in the bottom of the second I thought he called a couple up top on both Broms (Duane Bromley) and Woody (Trevor Wood). I got pretty steamed and that’s when it happened. But it’s over. Things like that happen in the game.” The game continued without incident after that.

Offensively on the night, for Team Easton, John Peck was 1-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Dan Konkle helped his cause going 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. For Carp, Shawn Houle was 1-3 while Dany Viel was 0-0 with two walks.

The playoff schedule has not been determined but at present, Carp will play Manotick in a best two out of three series with Manotick as the home team. As of press time, it is expected that Manotick will open at home on Wednesday, August 9th with the second game going in Carp on Thursday, August 10th at 8:30 PM at the Carp Fairgrounds.
