After the first game of Tuesday night’s double header (five inning games), it was tough to figure out which was hotter. The temperature outside or underneath the collar of Carp I4C Victory Head Coach and General Manager, Shawn Williams. Poor at bats, fail to execute at the right time and a general lack of focus and intensity lead to a 1-1- tie with the Ottawa Blitz in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action in Carp on Tuesday night. “Take nothing away form Jamie Blakely. He pitched well for Ottawa tonight,” said Williams, “However, we just didn’t have it in that first game. I know some guys were scrambling to get here from an earlier game in another league but that’s no excuse. If you come to play, be ready to play.”

The two teams agreed to play two five inning games and since one of them was originally scheduled for Ottawa’s home diamond in Manotick, it was the home team for the first game. With one out in the top of the first, the Victory loaded the bases on a Shawn Houle single followed by consecutive walks to Tim Power and Brooks Paziuk. After Duane Bromley struck out, Dany Veil walked scoring Houle and Carp took an early 1-0 lead. But that was all for the I4C Victory in the 1st when Eric Rosenquist struck out to end the threat. That was one of three innings in which Blakely struck out the side. He repeated the feat in the second and fourth innings.

Ottawa scored it’s run in the second inning when Ron Hrycak drew a lead off walk. After Derek Bulley flied out to centre, Jim Blakely sacrificed Hrycak to second and was driven in on a single by Eric Coats. Coats ended up on second when Neil Cooke, Carp’s ace pitcher, pressed into duty in left field, bobbled the ball but Coats was stranded at second when Kevin O’Neil popped up to Houle to end the second.

On the night, Blakely gave up one earned run on two hits, struck out 13 and walked four. There were no Ottawa errors. Carp countered with Bromley who in four innings gave up one earned run on three hits, one walk and one strikeout. Bromley gave way to Cooke in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on first and nobody out. That’s where the game took an interesting twist and ended in bizarre fashion. Jamie Blakely singled and then Marty Soucey walked to load the bases. After Scott Dumouchel lined out to Dany Viel who made a nice grab, Hrycak came to the plate with one out. With the infield playing in, Cooke induced Hrycak to ground out to Viel who threw home for the second out. Hrycak thought that it was the third out of the inning and went to the bench area where home plate umpire Ted Metcalfe called him out for leaving the field of play and that ended the inning and the game. Cooke ended up giving up one hit, no runs one walk and no strikeouts. Carp committed one error on the night.

Offensively for Carp, Houle was 1-3 with a run scored while Tim Power was 0-1 with two walks and Dany Viel was 0-1 with a walk and an RBI. Carp stranded five runners. For the Blitz, Soucey was 1-2 with a double and a walk and Eric Coats was 1-2 with an RBI. Ottawa left four runners on base.

In the second game, with Carp as the home team, Blakeley kept things rolling for the Blitz striking out four of the first six Carp batters he faced. However on the hottest day of the year, Blakely eventually ran out of gas and gave way to Derek Bulley in the third with a runner on second and two out. Mike Money reached on an error scoring Trevor Wood from second. Wood had replaced Eric Rosenquist at first after Rosenquist reached on a similar error. Wood then stole second. Money advanced to second on a passed ball and then to third on a single by Houle. With runners at the corners, Tim Power drilled the ball to right field for a double scoring Money and Houle. Power advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring in the third inning and giving Carp a solid 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Bromley reached on the third error of the game by Ottawa and scored when Trevor Wood hit a triple. Dany Viel walked and when Russ Mitchell grounded into a fielder’s choice, Viel was out at second but not before Wood scored from third to make it 6-0 for Carp to complete the scoring for the night.

For Carp, Cooke went four innings for the win, giving up one hit, no runs, walked one and struck out two. There were no Carp errors. For Ottawa, Blakely went 2 2/3 innings giving up one unearned run, no hits, no walks and struck out five. Bulley went 1 1/3 innings giving up six runs, (three unearned), on four hits, he walked two and struck out one. Ottawa committed three errors. Both teams left one runner on.

For Carp I4C Victory, Tim Power was 1-2 with a double and 2 RBIs and a run scored. Trevor Wood was 1-1 with a triple a stolen base and two runs scored. For Ottawa Marty Soucey was 1-1 with a walk.

“That second game showed better focus and a better effort by our team,” said Williams. “I’m confident that we’ll carry that momentum forward in our game on Thursday night against Team Easton.”

The win and the tie now gives the I4C Victory a record of 5-7-1. Carp’s next game will be a “four-pointer” versus the league leading Team Easton Thunder on Thursday, August 3rd at 8:30 PM in Carp. A victory by the Victory will give the team a .500 record in its first season in the GOFL.
