Valley wins both games in double header, finish season 10-4
from Tyler Cox
The Ottawa Valley Raiders played in a doubleheader Monday night at the RA Centre. In the 8 o’clock game, Valley beat C.B.U. Publishing 9-2. In Valley’s second game at 9:30, Valley dropped the Orléans Midget Rebels 8-0. The two wins push Valley ahead of the Rebels for second place. The Quyon Junior Flyers win the regular season pennant.
CAV GETS FIFTH ‘W’
Gary Cavanagh got the nod in the first game of Monday’s double-dip. He was very effective and earned his fifth win of the season. Cavanagh pitched 5 innings but allowed two runs in the sixth inning with one out. Cavanagh gave up five hits and registered seven strikeouts. Darren Featherstone pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs. Featherstone recorded four strikeouts.
Chad Milne and Featherstone homered for Valley. With the win, Valley swept the season series against CBU 4-0.
VALLEY HOLDS REBELS SCORELESS
The Rebels had a rare “off-night” in the second half of Valley’s twin bill. Nick Bowman started on the rubber for the Rebels. Nick only surrendered one run through three innings. The run came in the second inning when Lukas Kamps reached base on a fielder’s choice. Kamps scored when catcher Rich Antunes doubled.
Chad Hargrove relieved Nick Bowman in the fourth inning. Chad struggled to find the strike zone at times. Hargrove allowed one run in the fourth and six runs in the fifth on series of hits, hit batters, and wild pitches. Perhaps the struggle was a result of him not pitching to his usual catcher, Matt Bowman. (Matt caught for his brother Nick and left the game in the fourth inning when Nick was pulled). Valley owner Shawn Moher commented on the two hit batsmen.
“Chad’s not doing it on purpose. He’s a good pitcher. Good pitchers aren’t afraid to come inside, nor should they be.”
Featherstone collected the shutout win for Valley. He allowed one hit, a double in the sixth inning. Featherstone registered 11 strikeouts in six innings. After the sixth inning, the time limit had been reached.
The game involved some questionable officiating for both sides. As a result, Valley tempers flared on a couple of occasions. However, the rapport between the Rebels and Valley remained competitive and respectful.
Later this week, the Rebels will represent Ontario at the midget Canadians in Prince Albert, Sask. Best of luck to the Rebels from the Valley Raiders!
