Throwing Bats - a message from the Umps

from Gary Callaghan

We have had a number of incidents recently reported regarding thrown bats - near misses and direct hits. Four situations have been reported in the last three weeks (there may be more - I only know what I know !!). This is happening in all calibers of ball adult and minor.

Sometimes it's intentional (which usually warrants an EJECTION !!). Sometimes it's accidental - as a result of the follow-through of a swing. This follow-through is equally dangerous - nobody is expecting it. The catcher gets hit in in the shins or higher; the umpire moving out to cover the play must dance around the 'missile' if he/she has the opportunity to do so.

For safety reasons - please control the bats.....many of our umpires will warn the FIRST TIME ....but will call the batter out for interference on subsequent occasions. Keep in mind a warning is not necessary.

I would say that this is NOT a real big issue for anybody to worry about, I have never been or seen anybody hit in all of the games that I have played in men's ball.
