Easton defeats Greely 9-3 in GOFL opener

Walks Kill Eagles in Season-Opener
Konkle Strikes-Out Eighteen Eagles

from Tylercox.ca

The Greely DNTW Eagles got off to a shaky start in their season-opener, losing 9-3 to Ottawa Team Easton. With the loss, the expansion Eagles’ record is 0-1 in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL).

UP-AND-DOWN PITCHING
The Eagles’ pitching was inconsistent on Monday night. Ryan Cox got the nod, pitching three innings before being relieved by Shannon Borho. Borho pitched the remaining four innings. Both pitchers had moments of brilliance, but also struggled to find the strike zone at times. Combined, the Eagles pitching staff gave up 9 runs on eleven walks and six hits. Eagles catcher Stéphane Vinette was busy behind the plate, chasing stray pitches. However, he was optimistic after the game.

“Although [Ryan Cox and Borho] struggled at times, they managed to strike out some excellent hitters,” said Vinette. “We will build upon those strikeouts as we go into our next game.”

KONKLE HAS STRONG OUTING
Team Easton started their ace pitcher Dan Konkle. Konkle was impressive, striking out 18 Eagles. However, the Eagles managed three runs on five hits and four walks against Konkle. Shannon Borho led the Eagles offensively with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Borho talked about facing Konkle.

“There’s no question that [Konkle] is a very good pitcher,” said Borho. “It’s always fun to face him.”

STRONG SHOWING FOR EASTON
Ottawa Team Easton is the five-time defending GOFL Champion team. They proved to be too much for the expansion Eagles on Monday night. Easton was led offensively by catcher Todd Fraser. Fraser, who hit a one-run homer in the fifth, commented on the GOFL’s switch to yellow softballs.

“I like those new yellow balls,” said Fraser. “I am seeing the ball really well.”

The Eagles’ next game is against Manotick Lomor Printers on Monday, May 12 at 8:30 PM at Andy Shields Family Park in Greely. Admission to all games is free. The Eagles are sponsored by DNTW Chartered Accountants.

A one-run homer? Somebody get this guy a sportswriter`s thesaurus. I think there`s one on Carolyn Waldo`s desk at CJOH.
