Wednesday GOFL report: Two games, three runs

Two tight games on Wednesday night - Manotick and the Blitz tied at 1-1, while Easton squeaked by Quyon 1-0.

Easton 1 Quyon 0
from Shawn Laframboise

Quyon traveled to Stittsville to take on Team Easton for their second game in as many nights. Dan Konkle took the mound for Easton and brought his 'A' game. Matt Greer got the nod for Quyon.

In the first inning, Konkle struck out the first two batters and then got Joe 'ZZ' McCleary to fly out to the third baseman for a quick and effective start. Greer countered retiring three of the first four batters, giving up a lead-off walk to Dave Tubman.

In the bottom half of the third inning, Easton broke up the tie. Kevin Chevrier battled Greer and then reached 1st, beating out the throw on an infield hit to the shortstop. He subsequently scored on a Todd Fraser double that went off the fence in straight-away center.

Konkle remained perfect through four innings, but Joran Graham broke up his rhythm with a lead-off single in the fifth. Easton got out of it as Konkle retired the next three batters.

The Flyers threatened again in the sixth with Greer starting things off and reaching on an error charged to first baseman Scott Marion. That was followed up by a Steve 'Toad' McCord single to put runners on first and second with none out. Konkle settled down, striking out Jordan Kearns and Fraser threw out Greer attempting to swipe third for the "strike 'em out, throw 'em out" double play, killing all the Quyon momentum. Zeremiah Zuke Joe McCleary then grounded out to end the threat.

With Greer suffering a laceration to the hand in his attempted steal in the sixth, Graham came in to replace him on the mound. He retired the three batters he faced to give his team one last chance to muster up a run.

The Flyers threatened again in the top of seven, with Luke "Ham" Young taking a two-out offering hard down the 1st baseline, which eluded Marion. Ham took second base and this brought Shawn "Mo" Laframboise to the plate. Laframboise took the first pitch deep to right field however it just sliced foul. Konkle proceeded to end the game with a "K".

Todd Fraser ended the night at 2 for 3, with the game's lone RBI.

Manotick 1 Blitz 1
with info from Tony Riches

Lomor Printers and the Ottawa Blitz squared off Wednesday night in Manotick and played to 1-1 draw.

Jamie Blakely threw for the Blitz while Trevor Lahey had the ball for Manotick Lomor Printers.

The Blitz defence had two double plays to help keep the score low.

The speedy Tony Riches scored the only Manotick run of the game, pinch running for Steve "Ira" McLaughlin.

Don Cox had a walk for Manotick. Normally this would not be news - however, this was Don's first walk in two seasons. Last year he had no walks in 57 at-bats.
