Doubleheader results from Fitzroy UPDATED

Fitzroy Harbour was the site of a doubleheader in GOFL action on Tuesday night.

Quyon 5 Manotick 1

Flyers 5 - Lomor Printers 1

On a beautiful night for ball, Quyon and Manotick opened the first half of a twin bill in Fitzroy Harbour. It was a Lomor Printers home game, making up for a rain-out on May 21st. Matt Greer took the hill for Quyon while Manotick countered with Jason Smith. Both pitchers went the distance for their respective clubs.

The game remained scoreless through three innings, before the Flyers got things going in the top half of the fourth. Joe McCleary led off with a single to right field. Steve McCord followed that up with a bloop just over second base, however it appeared that the Manotick shortstop was going to come up with the catch. The ball ended up dropping in, McCleary was caught in no man's land, and the Printers ended up getting the lead runner at second. Nick "Albert" Armitage came to the plate and stroked a line drive double over the center fielder's head for his second hit of the night, scoring McCord from first. Luke Young kept things going with an infield single putting runners on the corners with only one out. Smith retired the next batter on strikes, and Young swiped second to put two in scoring position. Greer then helped out his cause stroking a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle making it 3-0 Quyon.

Manotick got one back in the bottom half of the inning. John Lindsey led off with a single up the middle. After a line drive double to deep left field by Calvin Medynski put runners on second and third, brother Lindsay hit a high fly ball off the grey monster to score the Printers' lone run.

Dennis McCleary got things going again for Quyon in the top of the fifth. With one out, he hit a hard ground ball underneath the second baseman and reached first on the error. Shawn Laframboise advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. After swiping third on a pass ball, older brother Joe cashed him in with a sac fly to center field.

Laframboise led off the seventh with a walk. Joe McCleary followed that up with his second single of the night. After advancing to third on a pass ball, Laframboise scored on a RBI single from Young to make it 5-1. The Flyers now have two weeks off, with their next action coming at home on July 8th where they will host a doubleheader against Carp. The Printers' see action again tonight as they host the Stittsville 56ers in the second half of a doubleheader in Manotick.

Fitzroy got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Troy Wilson hit a solo home run to score the first run of the game. Then consecutive singles by Jason Armstrong and Jason Cope put runners on second and third, as the throw on Cope's single went to third. Adam Brown then grounded out to second, but cashed in Armstrong to put the Electric up by 2.

The Printers answered back with a run in the fourth. Steve Edgerton led off the inning with a double, continuing his hot year at the plate. A Mike Branchaud single scored Edgerton, putting the score at 2-1 for the home team.

Manotick tied the game in the top of the sixth. Mike Branchaud hit hit another single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. John Lindsey then doubled with two out to score Branchaud and tie the game at 2.

The visitors then put up a 4 run seventh inning to take control. Lindsay Medynski led off with a single. Richie Antunes then dropped a homer over the fence in left centre field to put Manotick up 4-2. With one out, Joe Allan singled, and then scored on a Steve Edgerton homer, putting the Printers up 6-2. Troy Wilson then came in to pitch and get the final two outs for WC Electric.

Fitzroy staged a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but could not complete the comeback. Jason Cope hit a huge solo homer over the "grey monster" in right that landed at third base on the upper diamond to put the Electric within three. Adam Brown then singled and Trevor Barton walked, however Lahey shut the door with a strikeout to preserve the victory.

Both shortstops in the game, Steve Edgerton for Manotick and Mike Cavanagh for WC Electric made some excellent defensive plays in the game.
