TEAMS DRAWN FOR PROVINCIAL JUNIOR B CHAMPIONSHIPS

The chairman of the Men’s committee of the Ontario Amateur Softball Association has announced the draw of teams for the O.A.S.A. provincial Junior B to be held in Smiths Falls Aug 23rd and 24th.

George Ryder made the announcement earlier this week and it was released to participating teams. The seven team event will run Saturday August 23rd with a total of 11 games scheduled for the first day of competition. Both Civitan Diamonds at Lower Reach Park will be used with games beginning at 9am in the morning and concluding with the last scheduled games starting at 9pm at night. The championship round of the event starts at 9am on Sunday morning, and the final games scheduled for 1 and 3 pm on Sunday.

The tournament format is a traditional double knock out, but there is one variation. According to Ryder “With teams traveling as far as they do these days, the O.A.S.A has added a provision for a play back game for those teams who lose their first two games. This in affect guarantees each team three ball games.”

The draw was done randomly and sets up as follows. The host Smiths Falls Madden Hearing Center Junior Redmen face the Oshawa Double “B’s” at 9pm on Saturday morning. That is followed by the opening ceremonies. At 11am the Toanche play Newmarket and the Fingal Juniors play Atwood. At 1pm the winner of game one, either Smiths Falls or Oshawa plays the Glenworth Gators. The schedule continues for the remainder of the day, with two games at 3pm and 5pm, a single game at 7pm and two more at 9pm. Three and possibly four more are slated for Sunday. Single games at 9am,11am,1pm and 3pm if necessary.

Redmen manager Terry Shea was happy with the draw. “In terms of entertainment value it’s hard to beat some of the matchups as they were scheduled. We have seen or played against most of these teams over the past two seasons and it should be great ball. Playing against Oshawa to start out will be no easy task, they are traditionally one of the best in province. Being able to coach against Pete Landers is a personal thrill. I watched him pitch when I was a kid coming up through and I guess he be one of the greatest of all time.”

Shea also evaluated the rest of the field. “Just looking at results from the Junior Eliminations, Fingal and Toanche would have to be the favourites. But we played Newmarket and Glenworth at this year’s eliminations and Atwood last year ot the provincials and they are all good teams.”

The weekend of fastball kicks off the Friday night prior to the championships with an alumni game featuring may Redmen greats from the past. Any former Redmen interested in playing or just up for some reminiscing is asked to contact Terry Shea at 613-283-5349. Or by e-mail at tdtc_shea@sympatico.ca
