Details on Game 1 of GOFL finals
Stittsville 5 Team Easton 2
from Sam Oliver
The Stittsville 56ers jumped out to a 3 run lead in the top of the first and held on for the victory in game #1 of the best of 5 GOFL final. It was solid outing for Dan Bradley (7IP, 2R, 4H, 4BB, 11K) who pitched 5 scoreless innings before surrendering two runs in the 6th. Dan Konkle (7IP, 5R, 2H, 8BB, 1HB, 15K) gets tagged with the loss, and despite struggling with his control early, settled in to dominate later in the game.
The 56ers sent 9 men to the plate in the first inning and staked a 3 run lead. Scott Herriot walked to open the game, and, after stealing second, advanced to third on a wild pitch. John Craig followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. Dan Jessiman smacked a single up the middle scoring Herriot and putting runners at first and second with no one out. After the runners advanced a base each on a wild pitch, Ryan Bond hit a fly ball to centerfield deep enough to score Craig from third and move Dan Jessiman to third where he would eventually score on a wild pitch. Despite issuing three consecutive walks to load the bases, Konkle was able to escape the jam without further damage.
Stittsville added a run in the top half of the 2nd inning. Once again Herriot led things off with a walk. John Craig then hit a deep fly ball to left field which allowed Herriot to advance to second base. Dan Jessiman then flied to right-center field, allowing Herriot to tag and head for third. He would score on the play when the relay from right field was misplayed.
The 56ers scored their 5th and final run of the game in the top half of the 4th. Tyler Nystedt was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and found his way to third base after a couple of wild pitches. With one out, John Craig hit an infield single, to put runners on the corners. Nystedt was able to score when an errant pick off attempt of Craig at first base wasn’t able to be fielded cleanly.
The score remained 5 – 0 in favor of Stittsville until the bottom of the 6th inning. With one out, back to back singles by Todd Fraser and Randy Peck would set the table. The next Easton batter Cory Morrison lined a Bradley offering into the left-center field gap for a double, driving in both runs. Despite issuing a walk to Dave Tubman, Bradley was able to escape without further damage.
The 56ers tried to answer in the top half of the 7th. The first two batters reached base by way of a walk and an Easton error. Nothing would come of it though as Konkle struck out the next three batters in order to end the threat. Easton went three up three down in the bottom half of the inning to end the game, giving the 56ers a one game lead.
For Easton:
Todd Fraser 2 for 2, (2) 1B, BB, R
Randy Peck 1 for 3, 1B, R
