Solid Weekend for Gee-Gees

from Scott Searle

A resurgent Gee-Gees women's fastball squad won 4 games on the weekend with sweeps of both Guelph University and the University of Toronto. This was a very impressive feat for a very young and inexperienced Gee-Gee squad and a complete turnaround from last year when the team was 0-4 against the same two opponents.

The Gee-Gees sent Jillian Taylor to the circle in the first game against Guelph and saw one of her finest performances in the Garnet and Grey. She tossed a 3 hit shutout over 7 innings but the Gees offence couldnʼt keep up and the game went in to extra innings. It would take 12 innings to decide a winner as the Gee-Gees took home a 4-3 victory over a very strong Gryphons team. Jillian was supported by some sparkling defence up the middle from Laura Gallant and Emily Ernst who turned two double plays.

In the second game of the day the Gees displayed their offensive prowess as they roared to a 6-2 victory over the same Gryphons. Laura Skiperis was a leader with 2 hits and 3 RBIʼs in her home park in Guelph and Vanessa Homiak continued a strong season with 3 hits of her own.

The Gee-Gees travelled to Toronto for a re-match of last years bronze medal game with the Varsity Blues. In what has become one of the more exciting games of the year, the Gee-Gees romped to a 6-0 victory behind a stellar performance from Jillian Taylor. The team jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first behind a double from Mallory Watson and never looked back.

Emily Ernst took the ball in the second game of the double-header and picked up her 2nd win of the weekend in a great performance. The team fell behind 2-0 after a strong U of T start but showed great resiliency in crawling back to score runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings to take a 3-2 win. A two-out game winning double in the bottom of the 7th from Mallory Watson was the difference maker.

The team comes back to Ottawa for their home-opener this weekend and will host their 3rd Annual Bridge to the Future Clinic on Saturday morning at Pierre Rocque Park in Orleans from 10-12 AM. The clinic is free for minor athletes of all ages. All athletes are encouraged to stay and watch the team take on Brock and McMaster University at 2 and 4 PM on Saturday and 12 and 2 on Sunday. All games are at Pierre Rocque Park in Orleans.
