Local Heroes win GCMFL Playoffs
from Eric Rosenquist
Local Heroes defeated Murray Refrigeration 11-3 on Wednesday night to claim the 2008 Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League championship.
Local Heroes got off to a fast start in game two of the league finals, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Murray's answered back in their half of the first, cashing in a lead-off double by Murray's starting pitcher Bruce Robinson to tie the game at 1.
In the top of the 3rd, Locals added three more runs to go up 4-1, but Murray's made it close by scoring a pair in the bottom of the 4th thanks to an inside-the-park homerun by Tyler Nystedt.
Local Heroes took control of the game in the top of the 5th, batting around their order and putting up 7 runs off reliever Scott Jessiman to take an 11-3 lead. Some good defence and timely strikeouts by pitcher Billy Gerber erased any further Murray's threats and kept the score at 11-3, giving Local Heroes the 2008 GCMFL championship.
Local Heroes swept each of their three series en route to the championship, capping off a near-perfect season that saw them go a combined 24-1 in league, tournament, and playoff games. In doing so, they became the first team in well over a decade to win the GCMFL "triple crown" as the top team in the regular season, tournament, and
playoffs.
