GOFL Showcase - some updates
Results from Saturday at the GOFL Showcase. Great weather for the event and great support from the community (more on that later). In some cases, the results below are subject to correction, since some of the details are from memory and I did help close the beer garden. If you have corrections, leave a comment and I'll fix it.
West Carleton Electric 4 Manotick Lomor Printers 4
Manotick remained undefeated by tying Fitzroy Harbour by a score of 4-4.
Paul Ceppi for Manotick and Bud Hanlon for WC Electric respectively had complete games.
Fitzroy opened the scoring in the top of the third. Jim Hook singled and scored on a Steve Johnson RBI single. Johnson advanced to third on an outfield error, but was stranded.
The Harbour plated another in the fourth. Steve Cavanagh walked and stole second base. Cavanagh scored on an RBI single by Bud Hanlon. Hanlon was subsequently thrown out stealing by Manotick catcher Joe Allan to end the inning. Lomor captain Tony Riches reports that Joe Allan is #5 on the Manotick catching depth chart, but due to several absences for the morning game was pressed into service and did well.
Manotick took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth due to some miscues by the WC Electric defense. Don Cox reached on an error to start the inning. Jason Smith singled. After a ground out, Tony Riches walked to load the bases. When Joe Simpson hit a slow roller to second base, the Electric tried for the play at the plate but it was too late and Cox scored. After a strike out, Joe Allan hit a soft fly to right-centre that should have been caught - with two outs the runners were going and scored to make it 3-2 Manotick. Hanlon got a ground ball to get out of the inning.
West Carleton Electric responded in the top of the fifth. Jeff Campbell, a 15-year old rookie and Fitzroy Harbour native in his first men's game, singled with one out. Jon Daley cashed Campbell with a triple. Daley subsequently scored on Steve Johnson's single. Ceppi struck out the next batter and got a fly to right to end the inning with Fitzroy up 4-3.
Manotick tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Simpson singled with one out. After a fly ball to get a second out, Joe Allan hit a fly to right that was lost in the sun. Once again, with two out the runner wsa going and scored to tie the game. Allan made it to third on the miscue, but was stranded there as Hanlon induced a ground ball.
Fitzroy had a chance to score the go ahead run in the top of the seventh. Steve Johnson tripled with one out. When the next batter, Jeff Cavanagh, hit a ground ball to shortstop Jason Smith, Johnson tried to score. However, the throw was on target.
After the Printers failed to score in the bottom of the frame, the match ended tied at 4.
Ottawa Team Easton 5 Carp I4C Victory 3
Team Easton held on for a 5-3 victory over Carp I4C Victory in the 10AM game up on diamond two.
Brad Porter was the winning pitcher, Neil Cooke took the loss.
Team Easton added three Micksburg Twins to their roster with the presence of Chad Costello, Jamey Mick and Brad Pender in the lineup. Corey Costello would have attended but apparently had to work. (Side note: Chad Costello is getting married and his stag was Saturday night, so he and Jamey missed the afternoon game. Congrats Chad.)
Brad Pender, Chad Milne and Jamey Mick (2) all had RBIs for Easton. Easton staked out a 5-0 lead until the seventh, when Al Read's three run homer closed the game to 5-3.
Ottawa Blitz 7 Orleans Gators 1
With the Orleans Gators shorthanded with four key starters off playing in southern Ontario, the Ottawa Blitz won 7-1 in five innings in the 1pm game.
Jamie Blakely had the win, throwing a one hitter. Jeff Barber took the loss with relief from Nick Bowman.
Derick Bulley of the Blitz hit a home run, went 2/3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jon Ferguson went 3/3 with 3 RBIs.
Matt Medaglia had the only Orleans hit.
Carp I4C Victory 4 Greely DNTW Eagles 3
It looked like Greely might put their first win in the books in the 2pm game, but Al Read's walk off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh won the game for I4C by a score of 4-3.
Trevor Wood got the win in relief of Neil Cooke. Shannon Borho took the loss in relief of Gord Flannery.
Eric Colvin was 3 for 3 for Carp, including a solo HR off Greely starter Gord Flannery in the 5th to tie the game at 3. Anil Hayne and Mike Savoie hit solo HRs for Greely.
Stittsville 56ers 9 Manotick Lomor Printers 0
Stittsville ended Manotick's undefeated season with a 9-0 five inning game during the 3pm slot.
With Dan Bradley away for the weekend, Darren Featherstone got the ball again and threw a no-hitter over five. When interviewed by Fitzroy Fastball post-game, the absence of his father Mr. Featherstone, a mainstay during Darren's games far and wide, was noted. Darren replied that "he doesn't love me anymore", though sources report that in fact it was other family responsibilities that forced him to miss the Showcase.
Trevor Lahey took the loss for Manotick and had relief from Paul Ceppi.
The 56ers used the long ball again, as they had on Friday night, putting three homers in the Carp River off the bats of Sam Oliver, Kyle Jamieson, and Dan Jessiman.
With the win, the defending champs remain as the GOFL only undefeated team at 6-0-2.
Ottawa Team Easton 8 Orleans Gators 0
Team Easton rolled over Orleans in the 4pm game with a 8-0 victory in five innings.
Brad Porter had the two hit shutout, while Nick Bowman took the loss.
Lukas Kamps and Chad Milne had RBIs for Easton, while Brad Pender hit a grand slam homer in the third for the winning side. Mike Armstrong and Jason Naylor had the only hits for the Gators.
Ottawa Blitz 11 Greely DNTW Eagles 2
Break up the Blitz - they have a three game GOFL winning streak after a 11-2 mercy rule shortened win in the final 5pm game of the Showcase.
Jamie Blakely had the win and had relief from Derick Bulley. I think Shannon Borho took the loss and had relief from Gordie Flannery.
