Random thoughts and thanks on Showcase Weekend
A great weekend for fastball in Fitzroy Harbour, as the weather cooperated, the burgers were tasty and the beer was cold (exception: some of the 50 was warm).
- Another good show by local fans and sponsors in attending and helping out. Thanks go especially to our three major sponsors without who it would not be possible: West Carleton Electric Ltd (Dale and Laurie Hanna), Campbell Fuels (Russ Campbell) and the Fitzroy Harbour Community Association. Russ's 15-year old son Jeff made his Men's Fastball debut on Saturday morning and did pretty well in the Electric line-up.
- Thanks to all eight teams that attended. We missed the presence of the Quyon Flyers, but many of them were off in Niagara Falls and seemed to do well down there, so they had a good excuse. I know a couple of teams, Manotick and Orleans especially, had to call on some spares to field a team. Thanks for not pulling the 'chute. It was also good to see Darren Ladouceur out with the 56ers even though he was unable to play, and to see Kyle Jamieson up from Syracuse for the weekend.
- We appreciated the teams that represented in the beer garden and supported the team and the Community Association. Seeing teams from around the league all together in the beer pen, sharing a few laughs, a few rumours along with some recruiting going on for tournaments is what this thing is all about. I also want give props to the umps who certainly contributed to the burger and beer revenues as well.
- A big thank you to the guys that helped out at the Kids' Clinic. It was the first time we have tried something like this so I was unsure what to expect. What we got was about 30 kids from ages 3 to 15 that came out for an hour and had a great time thanks to all the players on WC Electric as well as Tyler Cox of Greely and Al Read and Kevin McGuire of I4C. Thanks a lot for helping make it successful. Congrats to Brendan Ovington of Fitzroy Harbour (son of Colin, a former Smiths Falls Junior fastball player) who won the bat generously donated by COMBAT sports (thanks Big Joe.) Thanks as well to Mike "Pudge" Branchaud of Manotick (and of Softball Canada) for the materials and equipment he supplied.
- The T-Ball Caveman enjoyed the clinic, especially learning baserunning and how to make the Blast Base honk with instructions from Neil Murphy. (Need wood? Call the Dog!). Unfortunately Fitzroy Fastball Junior was unable attend the clinic. When you are six and every boy in your Grade One class gets invited to a birthday party at the same time as your dad's Softball Clinic, it's time for some choices. There were tears because he couldn't do both, but I guess that's all part of growin' up.
- To the guys that went out of their way to tell me how they enjoyed the event, thank you, believe me it's appreciated.

Good to see that The Caveman is coming around and not scared to death anymore
Joe
The Caveman was having a good time, he's long forgotten what will forever by known as "The Incident".
