Manotick 5-0 over Quyon - now with bonus info

from Tony Riches

Manotick took advantage of a depleted Quyon squad and used another solid mound outing from Paul Ceppi to defeat the Flyers 5-0 Wednesday night.

Quyon`s best opportunity to score came when they loaded the bases on Ceppi`s only three walks of the game in the second inning. But Manotick escaped with no damage when second baseman Rich Antunes made a nice over-the-shoulder grab on a popup in short right field.

Bonus info: Manotick also escaped a jam in next inning with what may have been the first recorded 9-8-6 double play in league history. With one out and runners at first and second, Kenny (Bigger than Papi) Fleck hit a sinking line drive into right field that Trevor Power lunged at to make a shoetop running catch for the out. Both runners took off with the hit and were well off their respective bases when Power came up throwing. Unfortunately, he didn`t have a very good grip on the ball and it squirted out of his hand, landing behind him. Centerfielder Joe Allan had alertly backed up the play and still had time to pick up the ball and throw behind Matt Greer at second to end the inning.

The Printers opened the scoring when Rob Soublier led off the third with a walk and came around to score on singles by Antunes and Steve Edgerton. They added another run in the fourth on a leadoff single by Trevor Power, who advanced to third with a couple of walks and scored on a Joe Allan sac fly.

Don Cox made it 3-0 in the fifth inning with his second homer of the season before Manotick added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth, with Tony Riches and Jason Smith both plating with two out following an infield error.

Ceppi closed out the game strongly, retiring eight of the last nine batters and never allowing a Flyer to reach third after the second inning.
