Quyon wins 7-3 at Harbour Days - THE DEETS
The Quyon COMBAT Flyers won 7-3 in front of a good crowd at the Harbour Days game in Fitzroy Harbour on Friday night. Lots of fans in the stands and beer garden cheering both sides on in this one.
Joran Graham had the win with Drew Hathway picking up the save. Andy Barber went the distance for WC Electric.
Barber at first appeared to be a bit nervous throwing in front of a couple hundred fans and Quyon jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of one. Joel Langford led off with a double for the Flyers, was moved to third on Shawn Laframboise's sac bunt and scored on Nick Armitage's double. After a walk to Graham, Hathway launched a three run shot for a big lead. Barber induced two ground outs to end the first half inning of the game.
Fitzroy responded in the bottom as Andy Barber walked to lead off, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Despite the tough start, Barber settled in and started throwing well. The hard hitting Flyers managed only two hits in the next four innnings and Barber also threw out of a base loaded jam in the fifth caused by two errors and a walk.
The Electric scored a single run in the fourth on a Michael Cavanagh solo homerun - this in Cavanagh's second at bat after an almost two-year absence from fastball.
The home team added another run in the fifth to pull within a run. Andy Barber singled to lead off and scored on Beef Johnson's RBI double.
Quyon pushed their lead to two when Joel Langford hit a solo bomb in the top of the sixth.
Fitzroy had a big chance in the sixth but failed to score. With one out, Graham walked Mitch Taylor, hit Mike Cavanagh with a pitch and walked Jeff Barber to load the bases. At this point Flyers' manager Kenny Fleck made a switch and moved Graham to first base and brought Hathway in from the one bag to throw. Hathway got out of the jam with two strikeouts.
The game was briefly delayed in the sixth when a beligerent fan taunting the Flyers almost touched off an altercation. Cooler heads prevailed and nothing happened but the spectator (who was not a Fitzroy resident) narrowly avoided a beating.
The Flyers put across some insurance runs in the seventh. Graham walked to lead off and later scored on Matt Greer's fly ball to the outfield which was misplayed. With Greer on third after the error, Joe McCleary's ground out scored him.
Hathway shut things down in the bottom of seven, allowing only a walk and earning the save.
