Micksburg sweeps doubleheader in Manotick - with details
With info from Kerr Childerose
The Micksburg Twins defeated Barrhaven Broadway Blues 7-0 and the Manotick Taylor's Blitz 7-2 in GOFL play on Wednesday.
Micksburg 7 Barrhaven 0
The Mickburg Twins made the long commute to lovely Manotick Wednesday for a twin bill. In the first tilt they were pitted against the Barrhaven Broadway Blues. Corey Costello got the call for the Twins, while Chad Hargrove went the distance for Barrhaven.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Jamey Mick hit a two out single. Kerr Childerhose then hit a low liner that seemed to have handcuffed the left fielder as he dropped the ball. This two out error proved costly as Costello ripped a single that scored Mick and Childerhose. Joran Graham followed with a triple that scored Costello.
The Twins added to their lead in the fifth, when Mick led off with a single and Childerhose doubled. Graham brought them in with a towering home run to left field. Nick Eckford added a home run of his own immediately after that and the score reached 7-0. After the home side failed to score in their half of the fifth, the game was called due to the mercy rule.
Costello finished the night with a one-hitter, the lone single for Barrhaven coming off the bat of Steve Edgerton.
The Caveman's Choice for player of the game is Jamey Mick for his 2 for 3, two run performance. Note: Quite literally the Caveman would choose Jamey if he were making the decision. He is a big fan of "Jamey Mick from Micksburg" as a pitching coach, though he does have some skepticism that in fact Micksburg is a real place.
Costello: 5IP 0ER 1H 11K 0BB
Mick 2/3 2R
Graham 2/3 HR, Triple 3RBI 1R
Eckford 1/3 HR
Micksburg 7 Blitz 2
Note: Ivan Taylor offers his version on the Blitz Blog.
The second game featured Micksburg against the Manotick Taylor's Blitz. Like the first game, it remained scoreless until the third inning.
Joran Graham collected his second triple of the night that brought in Jamey Mick (walked) and Corey Costello (single).
The Twins scored three more runs in the fourth when Mick started a two out rally with a single. Young Riley Hennesy legged out an infield single, followed by a Costello walk. Graham brought all three home with a bases loaded double.
Micksburg added another run in the top of the sixth, but the Blitz, to their credit, would not go away and scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Blitz continued to grind away in the seventh, but despite base runners, could not get any more runs, making the final 7-2.
Graham had the win, in five innings of relief of Costello, while Jamie Blakely took the loss for the Blitz with relief from Derick Bulley.
Player of the game goes to Joran Graham, getting the nod as Caveman's Choice with the pitching victory and going 4 for 4 with a triple, double and six RBIs.
