Kars comes back to beat Stittsville 6-5 - Wednesday night details

from Chad Milne, info from Cory Morrison

Kars 6 Stittsville 5
Kars Aces travelled to Stittsville Wednesday night to take on the 56ers at the Grove. Cory Alkerton started for the Aces, while Darren Featherstone was on the mound for the 56ers.

Kars jumped out to an early lead on a solo homer by Cory Alkerton in the first inning. Kars added another single run in the second inning. Andy Davey led off with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Hopkins.

Kars looked to break the game open in the fifth. After Hopkins was called out for being hit by his own bunt while out of the batter’s box and then a fly out, Kristian Knapp and Cory Morrison both singled and Cory Alkerton followed with a walk. With two out and the bases loaded, Chad Milne hit the first pitch from Featherstone right at the 56ers first baseman to end the threat. Kars added another single run in the sixth on a lead-off homer by Matt Alkerton.

Cory Alkerton had little trouble with the 56ers through the first five innings, but that changed in a hurry in the bottom of the sixth. With a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead, Stittsville exploded for 5 runs. After a couple of walks, Darren Ladouceur drove in a run. After Scott Herriot was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Brad Porter came in to relieve Alkerton. Consecutive walks to Dan and Scott Jessiman scored two more runs, a two RBI single by Trevor Scott put Stittsville in the driver's seat.

Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, Lukas Kamps reached on an error to start the inning, but was quickly erased on a fielder’s choice by Knapp. Morrison was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. With Cory Alkerton at the plate, both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Alkerton then hit a ball back to Featherstone on the mound, who checked Knapp at third, looked to throw to first, but turned back to third to catch Knapp in no-man’s land. What ensued has to be the longest run-down in GOFL history, a display not likely seen since our minor ball days. With at least a dozen throws, Sttitsville finally wore down the fleet-footed Knapp and tagged him for the second out of the inning.

With two out and runners on first and second, Milne cashed in Morrison with a single to left. Matt Alkerton then walked to load the bases. Davey then hit a tricky ground ball that was misplayed by the Sttitsville infielder, allowing Cory Alkerton to score, tying the game 5-5. With Powers at the plate, Milne raced home on a wild pitch to score the go-ahead run.

Porter came on strong in the bottom of the seventh for the Aces, preserving the 6-5 come-from-behind victory. Porter earned the win, while Featherstone took the loss.

Caveman's Choice for player of the game goes to Cory Alkerton for five strong innings of pitching, and hitting a homerun.

Morrison 1-2, run, sac, hbp
C. Alkerton 1-3, hr, rbi, 2 runs, bb
