Quyon Flyers and West Carleton Electric split doubleheader

West Carleton Electric and the Quyon Flyers split a doubleheader in Fitzroy Harbour on Tuesday night.

West Carleton Electric 6 Quyon Flyers 2
In the first match up, the Electric prevailed 6-2 with Andy Barber earning the complete game win and Mark Wright taking the loss with relief from Matt Greer.

Wright, a late season pick up by the Flyers from the beer garden at the Gil Read, last threw a competitive fastpitch game when Andy Barber was in peewee, but did decently over two and a third innings of work.

The Electric scored two in the first. Andy Barber walked, as did brother Derek with one out. As they advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Jeff Barber's double brought both in.

Fitzroy added a third run in the third inning. Neil Murphy was hit by a pitch to start. After a fly out, the bases were loaded when Jeff Barber and Jeff Cavanagh walked. At this point, the Flyers made the pitching change to bring in Greer. He got a strike out, but then Charlie Ross hit an RBI single to score Murphy. Greer got out of the inning with a ground out.

Quyon scored two in the fourth on a Greer double and a Joe McCleary home run.

West Carleton scored another three runs in the fourth. Steve Cavanagh reached on a misplayed grounder and Andy Barber bunted for a single. After two fly outs, Jeff Barber's three run shot made it 6-2.

Jeff Barber gets the nod for a big night at the plate with 5RBI, a homer and a double and a couple of nice plays at second base.

The second game of the night was a high scoring affair, as Matt Greer went the distance for the win for Quyon. Steve Cavanagh had the start for Fitzroy, with Andy Barber coming in relief and taking the loss.

Quyon got a run in the top of the first on a solo home run by Greer.

West Carleton answered back, scoring three in the first. Jeff Barber had an RBI as did Dave Bahm.

In the third, Quyon put three across. If the Caveman's scorekeeping is to be believed (yes, I let him work the sheet), Matt Greer had an RBI, while Joe McCleary had two RBIs.

Fitzroy regained a 5-4 lead in the fourth. Jon Daley's two run homer brought in Dave Bahm who had doubled.

Quyon rebounded immediately with four in the top of the 5th. Dennis McCleary led off with a solo homerun. After an out, Greer doubled, Joe McCleary walked, and Nick Armitage hit a three run shot to make it 8-5 for the Flyers.

WC came back to plate two in the fifth. Adam Brown singled to start the inning and bases were loaded when Derek Barber reached on a misplayed grounder and Jeff Barber walked. A fielder's choice erased Brown at home, but Bahm was hit by a pitch and Daley walked to score two.

The Flyers added a vital insurance run in the seventh. Moe Laframboise's blooper to right couldn't be caught. After two strikeouts, an RBI single by Armitage scored Laframboise to make it 9-7.

The Electric made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't close the deal. After a fly out, Bahm walked and he took second on a wild pitch. There was a strikeout, bringing Steve Cavanagh to the plate. Cavanagh's high fly ball to left just landed fair, scoring Bahm. Trevor Wood, into pinch hit, walked on four pitches to put two men out, but Greer got the next batter to fly out to end the game.

Nick Armitage gets the recognition as Caveman's Choice in this game, going 2-4 with a homer and 4RBIs, including the game winner in the seventh.
