Stittsville wins 1-0 squeaker over I4C

Game report courtesy Shawn Williams

If anyone was looking for some early Canada Day fireworks, they wouldn’t have found them at the Carp Fairgrounds on Monday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action between the Stittsville 56ers and the home team, Carp I4C Victory.

In a tight well pitched game, Stittsville came out ahead 1-0 on the strength of a one-hitter forged between Stittsville ace Dan Bradley and reliever Darren Featherstone. The soon to be married Bradley struck out the first three Carp batters he faced and went on to pitch five innings of shut out ball while striking out eight and only giving up two walks. Featherstone came into the game in the sixth inning for the save but not without a scare from Carp.

In the sixth inning, Mike Money lead off and reached first base on an error. Shawn Houle stepped to the plate and on a fielder’s choice Money was out at second. Kevin McGuire re-entered the game for Dany Viel. In the previous inning, Viel had made an outstanding throw to home from left field to cut down Scott Jessiman who was running for Sam Oliver on the two out catcher speed up rule. With McGuire at the plate, he singled to right to put runners at the corners and advanced to second on a wild pitch. That’s when the potential fireworks fizzled. Tim Power grounded to third and Houle took off. With the ball not getting through the infield, the throw home and the tag by Oliver had Houle out at home. Taking a wide turn at first, Power was caught in no man’s land and a throw by Oliver caught him off the bag for the third out of the inning, erasing any potential comeback. Carp went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

On the mound for Carp, Trevor Wood (0-1) was very strong going seven full innings. Wood used a combination of a crafty curve ball and excellent change up throughout the game to keep Stittsville runners off the base paths. He gave up one earned run on five hits, struck out nine and had no walks while Stittsville left five runners on base. Carp made two errors. Bradley and Featherstone combined for a one-hit shut out, with two walks issued and Carp left three runners on. Stittsville committed two errors.

At the plate for Stittsville, Trent MacDonald went 2-3 with a single and a double and a run scored while Oliver went 2-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI. For Carp I4C Victory, McGuire was 1-2 with a single.

After the game, Carp Head Coach and General Manager had this to say. “We had a chance to tie the game and take the lead but base running mistakes ran us out of the inning and effectively the game. With runners at second and third and one out, we have to take advantage of that situation. Stittsville only had 10 players and when Dan Bradley left the game it didn’t give Darren Featherstone much of a chance to warm-up. You just can’t make mistakes like we did in this league and expect to get away with it.” Williams went on to say, “But I think we learned from it and hopefully we won’t have a repeat in the future. We all make mistakes and the best we can hope for is to learn from them.”
