I4C wins the battle of the expansion teams over Blitz 8-3

Game report courtesy Shawn Willliams:

Neil Cooke was sick twice on Wednesday. He was sick in bed in the morning and then came out and gave a sick performance on the mound for the Carp I4C Victory in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action in Manotick last night against the Ottawa Blitz. Battling a flu bug, the stocky red headed right-hander led Carp to an 8-3 win over Ottawa. Cooke struck out the side in the first and fifth innings, including all three batters he faced in the fifth. At one point during a stretch from the fourth to the seventh inning, Cooke struck out eight of nine batters for I4C Victory. On the night, Cooke gave up one earned run on four hits, with 15 strikeouts, two walks and a pair of wild pitches.

At the plate, newcomer Kyle Gourgon led the way for Carp going 4-4 with two singles, two triples, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. The hockey scholarship athlete attending Mercyhearst University in Erie, PA. showed that he is as equally adept with a softball bat as he is with a hockey stick. Kevin McGuire went 2-2 with two singles, a walk, a sacrifice, an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Another solid night of offence from the sure handed shortstop.

For Ottawa, Derick Bulley was 2-3 with a single, a double an RBI and two runs scored. Bulley also took the loss for Ottawa in relief of Jim Blakely. In four innings pitched, Bulley gave up six runs on nine hits and walked three. In Blakely’s three innings of work, he gave up two runs on five hits and walked one.
