I4C wins on the road over Stittsville

Courtesy Sam Oliver

The Carp I4C Victory defeated the Stittsville 56ers by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night in Stittsville, rebounding from a tough loss to West Carleton on Monday night and snapping the 56er five game winning streak.

All the scoring in the contest took place in the third inning. With one out in the top half, Carp batter Eric Rosenquist hit what looked to be a routine ground ball, however, when the throw from Stittsville short stop Dan Preston eluded the 56er first baseman, Rosenquist was able to advance to second. Victory lead off hitter Mike Money next drew a walk but not before Rosenquist had advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out and runners on the corners, I4C shortstop Kyle Gourgon executed a perfect bunt, scoring Rosenquist, advancing Money to third, while earning an infield single. The next Carp batter, Brooks Paziuk, hit a ground ball towards second base. Unfortunately, what should have been an out, turned into a single, driving in Money. The 56er second baseman had vacated his normal fielding position to cover second base as Gourgon was attempting to steal second. A Matt McNish single plated Gourgon, capping off the Victory scoring.

Stittsville responded with a run in the bottom half of third. Hot hitting third baseman John Craig hit a two out double to the left-centerfield gap, and scored on the Dan Jessiman RBI single. Unfortunately, that would be it for the 56er offence which seemed a little flat and had trouble adjusting to a called strike zone which could be described as generously wide and vertically challenged.

Trevor Wood earned the victory for I4C, scattering 6 hits over 7 innings. Dan Bradley takes the loss, despite allowing only 3 hits on the night.

This game also saw the return of Carp/Stittsville player Greg McMillan to the ball park. McMillan, who suffered multiple fractures of his right leg during a game in mid-June, reports that the healing process is going well and hopes to be back on both feet in 6 months and back on the ball field next year.
