Valley defeats "Team 6" in RA League action

By TYLER COX, Ottawa Valley Raiders Fastball Club

OTTAWA-Valley Raiders beat Team Six 4-2 last night in a busy night at the RA Centre, which featured four league games. Gary Cavanagh collected the win for Valley, while Jamie "Lumpy" Wilson took the loss for Team Six.

VALLEY STRIKES FIRST
Valley's first run came from leadoff hitter Tyler Cox. He led off the game with a walk, and scored from first on a double by shortstop Adam Bickell. But Wilson quickly settled in for Team Six, striking out three Valley batters in the first inning to hold Valley to one run in the first frame.

Valley’s second run came in the third inning when leftfielder Derek Bergeron scored on a base hit from centerfielder Will Mood. Bergeron had reached base on a hit after a painful at-bat in which in fouled a ball off his face!

Right fielder Lukas Kamps and catcher Stephane Vinette reached base in the sixth inning on a single and an error, respectively. Kamps advanced from second to third base on a wild pitch. Vinette then stole second on the next pitch. Gord Flannery then drove in both Kamps and Vinette with a single to leftfield.

The umpires called the game after the sixth inning due to the RA’s 90-minute time limit rule. Wilson pitched all six innings for Team Six. His recent arrival to Team Six has instantly made them a challenging opponent.

CAVANAGH COLLECTS WIN Valley’s starting pitcher Cavanagh collected his third win of the season. He threw three shutout innings. Team Six threatened in the second inning, but stranded two base runners in scoring position. Cavanagh pulled himself from the game after the third inning despite allowing no runs.

“Every time I’ve tried to throw four innings this season I’ve gotten into trouble. Let’s put Gord in.”

Flannery pitched the fourth and fifth innings for Valley. Team Six scored two runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Amazingly, all four Team Six hits were not hit hard yet were impossible to defend against.

Valley captain Roy Black commented on the Team Six bloopers. “There’s nothing we can do. These hits are all just a bunch of Texas leaguers.”

Ryan Cox pitched the sixth inning for Valley after Flannery pulled his hamstring in the top of the sixth inning after legging out a single. Ryan Cox collected the save after striking out the side in the sixth.

Valley’s next game is Wednesday night at 9:30 against the Orléans Midget Rebels.
