The Flyers hosted the Pontiac Royals in UOVMFL interlock action last night in Quyon. Matt Greer got the start for Quyon, going seven strong and picking up the win. Darren Featherstone started for the Royals and had relief from Mark Wright.
The Flyers threatened in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third but failed to cash them in. Shawn Laframboise got things started for the Flyers in the fourth, reaching base on an error and stretching it out to second on a lazy play in right field. Steve McCord cashed in the game's first run with a hit to left field.
In the top of the fifth, Lenny Burger reached second base after a misjudged fly ball by left fielder Jordan Kearns, and was then hit in by Royals catcher Matt "Pommer" Romain. After getting a little momentum going, things came to a halt with half of the lights going out on the field half way through the fifth inning.
After about a fifteen minute delay, Cooney Greer took the first pitch he saw to center for a lead off double. Nick "Albert" Armitage then hit one to the field and brought the play to the plate. Cooney collided with Pommer and was called safe for the Flyers go ahead run, thankfully nobody was seriously hurt. Albert reached third base on the play and was later scored with a ground ball by Kearns.
The Royals lose a costly game as they battle with Shawville for home field in the playoffs. Their next game will be Sunday at 3:00pm as they travel to Fitzroy to play WC Electric. The Flyers will see action tonight in the Blitz tourney against Carp at 7:00. The Flyers other UOVMFL game, scheduled against Shawville on August 1st, will be rescheduled to next Wednesday July 26th in downtown Quyon at 8:00.
