Burger strikes out 18, Pontiac defeats Shawville 4-3 in Game 1 of UOVMFL semi-finals

from Shawn Laframboise

The UOVMFL playoffs got under way last night with the 2nd place Pontiac Royals hosting the Shawville Athletics.

The A's started the scoring in the second inning when Royals starter Lenny Burger walked Jeff Tanguay. On the ensuing steal attempt, the ball was thrown into the dirt before second base and ended up in center field. Another error on the play charged to the center fielder allowed Tanguay to score all the way from first.

Todd Fraser took the mound for the A's. In the bottom of the second inning, Ron Laronde reached second on an error to Tanguay in center field. After retiring the next two batters, Fraser surrendered a two-run homerun to left field by Jacques Pilon, who went yard for the first time this season.

The Royals continued the scoring in the third with Joe McCleary reaching base on a two-out error charged to second baseman Al Kuehl. Chad Milne singled, and Ron Laronde cashed them both in with a double.

Fraser walked the bases loaded in the fifth but proceeded to get out of the jam with a fly ball to right field.

The A's bats were quiet until the sixth inning when Steve McCord broke up the no-hitter with a triple to the gap in right. Todd Fraser cashed him in with a double, followed by another double by Darron Barr. That brought the game within one.

Al "Wheels" Kuehl led off the seventh and reached first with a bunt single but was left stranded as Burger struck out the next three batters.

Both Burger and Fraser went the distance with the Royals ace striking out 18 batters.
