Quyon take game one of RA Final 5-4 in 8 innings

from Shawn Laframboise

The Quyon Flyers and Valley Raiders squared off in game one of the RA league finals last night. Darren Featherstone got the start for Valley and Matt Greer got the nod for the Flyers. The Flyers were undefeated against Valley during league play, however they were without Featherstone in each of those outings. Coming off of a big game Monday night against Orleans, Featherstone kept his groove going, retiring the first ten Quyon batters. Greer went the distance for the Flyers allowing 4 runs.

Valley took an early lead when Greer walked a batter and gave up a two-run bomb to Stephane Vinette. Valley pushed one more run across the plate and held a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning when the Flyers' bats finally showed a little bit of life.

Featherstone had been pitching a gem when Cooney Greer finally got a hit for Q-town. Greer stole second and later scored on a Luke Young bloop to right field that was misplayed, moving Hammer Young all the way to third. Featherstone was pulled after allowing just two runs. He was replaced by Gord Flannery who proceeded to get the third out and end the threat.

The Raiders responded with another run of their own pushing the score to 4 - 2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Steve McCord led off for the Flyers with a base hit up the middle. Nick 'Albert' Armitage followed that up with a hit of his own, putting runners on the corners with none out. Ben Younge drove in the Flyers' first run of the inning with the most exciting play in baseball, the sac fly. Flannery followed up that pop-out with the second out of the inning, getting Kenny Fleck to ground out, however Armitage advanced to second on the play. Valley was one out away from winning game one of the finals but Cooney Greer had other thoughts. The number 9 hitter that night, Greer slammed a triple to the gap in right - center to tie the game up at 4.

Starting with a runner on second in the eighth, Valley got the bunt down, advancing Ryan Cox to third. This brought up the top of the order with Chad Milne, and he hit a hard chopper to second base. With a slow jump on third, and the always dangerous arm on Armitage, Cox was unable to score on the play giving the Flyers their second out. Cooney then induced Rich Antunes to ground out to end the Valley inning with no runs scored.

The bottom of the eighth started with Hammer Young on second and Jordan Kearns at the plate. After failing to get the bunt down on the first two pitches, Kearns came through under pressure with a good bunt on the third strike. Dennis McCleary followed this up with a walk-off bloop single to right field to win the game for the Flyers.

Game 2 will take place on Monday night.
