Carp Opens Second Season With a 3-2 Win Over the Orleans Gators
from Shawn Williams
On a night when the Ottawa Senators opened the third round of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a win, the Carp I4C Victory was doing the same at the Carp Fairgrounds on Thursday night with an opening game 3-2 win over the young Orleans Gators.
It was a warm, breezy night with great conditions for fastball in May. Carp wasted no time in opening the scoring in the bottom of the first, when leadoff hitter Kevin McGuire walked and advanced to third on a single by Shawn Houle. Steve McLaughlin followed that with a single to score McGuire making it 1-0. Orleans starter and I4C Victory tournament pitcher, Chad Hargrove settled down after that and struck out the next three batters.
In the bottom of the second inning, veteran third baseman, Brooks Paziuk lead off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a McGuire single for a 2-0 Carp lead. In the bottom of the third, Matt McNish hit a ball to the centrefield fence for a triple and was cashed in by a Pete Pettit single. 3-0 Carp.
The Gators proved why it was one of the best Midget aged teams in the country last year. Orleans is made up of players that were a top team at last year’s Midget Nationals and while many have graduated from that age category the lessons learned at last year’s Nationals taught them to battle back. In the top of the fourth, Matt Alkerton hit a solo shot to right and then both Matt Bowman and Curtis Summers singled. Both Bowman and Summers were stranded at the end of the inning but not before the Gators rattled the cages and let Carp know that they were not going to lie down.
In the Gators sixth, Alkerton reached safely on a throwing error from the normally sure handed McGuire and advanced to third on a Bowman single. At that point, Carp Coach Shawn Williams replaced starter Paul Ceppi with reliever Neil Cooke. Cooke walked Hargrove to load the bases and then Summers hit a sacrifice fly to centre scoring Alkerton to make the score 3-2. But that was all for the Gators as Cooke shut the door the rest of the way.
Paul Ceppi threw 5 1/3 strong innings for Carp, giving up one earned run on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Cooke earned the save giving up no earned runs, no hits, walking one and striking out three. Orleans had one error. For the Gators, Hargrove went all the way, throwing six innings and giving up three earned runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out 13. Carp committed one error.
Offensively for Carp, McGuire lead the way going 2-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Carp catcher, Houle was 2-3 at the plate. For Orleans, Alkerton was 1-3 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored while Bowman went 2-3. Summers was 1-3 with an RBI on the sacrifice fly in the sixth.
