56ers Routed in Home Opener; GOFL to consider steroid policy
from Sam Oliver
The Manotick Lomor Printers opened the season on the road last night and cruised to an 11 - 1 victory over a hapless Stittsville squad.
Shannon Borho picked up the win for the Printers, throwing 4 complete innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 7 while walking none. The only real mistake for Borho was a thigh high change up that Darren Ladouceur stroked over the left field fence in the second inning. Trevor Lahey came on in relief of Borho in the 5th inning, and despite loading the bases escaped without giving up any runs. His line on the night was 3 innings pitched, giving up two hits, allowing 3 free passes and striking out 4.
The 56ers countered with ace Dan Bradley who suffered the loss despite giving up only 4 hits through 5 complete innings, striking out 10 along the way. Unfortunately, the combination of 2 walks,7 Stittsville errors, coupled with timely Manotick hitting saw Bradley give up 5 runs all of which were unearned. Darren Featherstone relieved Bradley in the 6th, and after walking Manotick lead off man Joe Allan, struck out the next three batters in order. Unfortunately for Featherstone, the 7th inning would see him surrender 6 runs on 4 walks (including the first 3 batters of the inning), a 2 RBI single off the bat of Rich Antunes and a 3 RBI double off the bat of Manotick SS Adam Bickell. Featherstone's line on the night; 2IP, 6R, 5ER, 2H, 5BB, 4K.
Offensively, Manotick catcher Rich Antunes lead the way for the Printers with 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate driving in 3 runs.
In a related story, Manotick player/manager Tony Riches is said to be requesting a league investigation into Stittsville third baseman John Craig regarding alleged steroid use. It was a strange incident in the 7th inning that prompted the speculation. The diminutive Craig took a mighty swing at a Lahey offering and despite completely missing the pitch, the force of Craig's hack snapped his composite bat into two distinct pieces. Thankfully no one was injured on the play, except perhaps, Craig's reputation. When asked about the allegations after the game Craig reportedly attributed this new found power to a switch from light to regular beer. Stittsville manager Sam Oliver refused to comment on the incident until speaking with GOFL president Bob "El Presidente" Templeton regarding any possible sanctions against his third baseman.
