Carp "Showcase" Report

from Shawn Williams

To all readers of GOFL Game reports on the Blog. I know I take some ribbing from guys in the league about the length of my reports. Please understand that I am “ghost writing” for the West Carleton review so I try to write it in a journalistic style and it saves me having to do two separate reports; one for Terry Boland at the Review and one for the Blog. I also want to make it clear that I am trying to write this as if I was a reporter at the game and it is never my intent to embarrass any of the teams in the league or players with the way I write or what I write. I know how hard everyone works to be the best they can be at the game and the long volunteer hours put in by coaches, managers, team captains and players. At the very least, I’ve asked Adam to cut my quotes out of the stories on the Blog since no one wants to hear what I have to say anyway! Thanks to everyone for your understanding.

Carp Goes 3-0 at GOFL Showcase Day in Quyon
McNish Leads the Way with 4 Home Runs.
Victory Outscores Opposition 35-8 in Three Games

On a muggy Saturday in Quyon, the only thing hotter than the air was the bats of the Carp I4C Victory. The Carp I4C Victory along with six of the seven other teams in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) gathered in Quyon on June 2nd to show off the best in Intermediate Men’s' Fastball in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

Carp started the day against its 2006 GOFL expansion cousins, the Ottawa Blitz. The Victory was trying to avenge an earlier loss to the Blitz at the Kingston Cowboys Tournament held in Sydenham on the Victoria Day Weekend. In that game, Jamie Blakely threw a perfect game for the Blitz and he took to the rubber again in this game.

The game started well for the Blitz as they broke for two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Carp got one of those back in the bottom of the first when Mike Money singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Shawn Houle single. Carp tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two out, Brooks Paziuk walked and was replaced by Eric Rosenquist who promptly stole second and then scored on an RBI single from Kyle Gourgon. But the Blitz regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Scott Dumouchel hit a solo blast and added another in the sixth when Andrew Bruce singled, stole second and scored on a single off the bat of Will Mood.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the Carp bats came to life. The Victory struck for nine runs including three home runs. Al Read started the home run parade with a two run shot to tie the game and after the second out of the inning, Gourgon hit his first home run of the season. The barrage ended when Matt McNish hit a three run homer to put Carp up by a score of 11-4. It was the first of four home runs on the day for McNish. With Carp up by seven at that point, the Blitz used its option to end the game via the league mercy rule.

Neil Cooke (1-0-1, 1 SV) had the complete game (six inning) win for Carp while Jamie Blakely took the loss with relief from Derick Bulley. Gourgon was 2-3 with a single, home run and two RBI's and a run scored and Kevin McGuire was 2-4 with a single, double an RBI and two runs scored. For the Blitz, Bruce was 2-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Click here for boxscore

In the second game of the day against the Manotick Lomor Printers, the home run parade continued with three more balls clearing the fence on Diamond #1 in Quyon. McNish had his second of the day, a two run shot along with a two run round tripper from Money and a solo home run from McGuire. The final score was 8-1 Carp in five innings with Manotick choosing to concede via the league mercy rule with Carp leading by more than six runs after five innings of play. Paul Ceppi (3-1) had the win for Carp while Trevor Lahey had the loss for Manotick. Money was 2-3 with a single, a home run, two RBI's and two runs scored. McNish was 2-3 with a single, home run, two RBI's and two runs scored. Donny Cox hit his second home run of the season versus Carp for the Printers and Lahey was 2-2 in support of his own cause. In the final game of the day, Carp took on the Orleans Gators, a team that had battled hard with the Victory in the opening game of the 2007 regular season. In that game a hard fought battle ended in a 3-2 win for Carp. Despite jumping out to a 4-0 lead after a half inning of play, once again, the young guys from the east were not about to go away. The Gators loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but were unable to score as Trevor Wood (2-0) fought his way out of the jam. Despite being down 6-0 after three, the Gators had managed to put runners on base in all three innings. However, in the top of the fourth inning the floodgates opened and it was just too difficult to stem the tide for the younger, less experienced Gators. Carp sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored 10 runs on 10 hits including four home runs, two off of the bat of Ceppi in the same inning. Wood threw the complete (five innings) game for the win as Orleans took advantage of the league mercy rule with Carp up by more than six runs after five innings. Nick Bowman had the loss for Orleans. Ceppi was 3-3 with a single, two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI's. McNish was 2-3 with two home runs, four RBI's and three runs scored. For Orleans, Chad Hargrove who plays in tournaments for the I4C Victory had a three run blast to centrefield in the bottom of the fifth to ruin Wood's shutout bid. Click here for boxscore

The two teams will meet again on Thursday, June 7th in Orleans at Pierre Rocque Park. Game time is 8:30 PM and admission is free. Carp's next home game is Thursday, June 14th at 8:30 PM at the Carp Fairgrounds.
